Newbury Park Pulls Rank on Camarillo

Chris Thorgerson pitched a six-hitter Friday as Newbury Park High upset Camarillo, 3-1, in a Marmonte League baseball game at Camarillo.

Thorgerson (2-5) struck out one and walked three as the Panthers (9-10, 3-7 in league play) took a 3-0 lead after six innings and allowed the Scorpions (17-3, 8-2), ranked third in The Times’ area poll, to score in only the seventh.

Camarillo’s Mike Corral and Newbury Park’s Chris Czernek each had two hits.

Quartz Hill 9, Antelope Valley 6--Bryan Garcia (4-0) scattered eight hits, striking out nine and walking two, and had three hits as the Rebels (16-4, 6-0) downed the Antelopes (13-9, 4-2) in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley.

Notre Dame 4, Chaminade 3--Brian Kaye walked Marc Jonnone with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Knights (13-7, 4-4) edged the Eagles (15-5-1, 7-2-1) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Saugus 15, Burbank 11--Brad Fogel hit a two-run home run to cap an eight-run fourth inning for the Centurions (14-8, 7-4) in a Foothill League game at Burbank.

Freddy Sanchez had two doubles for the Bulldogs (8-11, 6-5).

Calabasas 7, Santa Clara 2--Tanner Trosper (6-1) pitched a five-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none, and Josh Goldfield had two hits and three RBIs as the Coyotes (15-2-2, 10-0-1) trounced the Saints (6-9, 4-7) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Moorpark 9, Santa Paula 7--Ryan Yoshiwara singled home Wes Rasmussen with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth at Santa Paula and the Musketeers (9-9, 6-5) handed the Cardinals (11-5, 7-3-1) their third consecutive Frontier League loss.

COLLEGE

Santa Clara 9, Pepperdine 8--Jeff Leber singled home Mike Frank with two out in the ninth to give the Broncos (29-17, 13-4) a West Coast Conference victory at Pepperdine (26-17, 14-4).

Cal Lutheran 17, Pomona-Pitzer 3--Ruben Torres had four hits--including three doubles--and drove in three runs as the visiting Kingsmen (26-8-1, 18-1) clinched at least a tie for first place in the SCIAC.
