Long Beach State Sweeps Past Pacific in Softball

Amy Miner (13-5) recorded her eighth shutout of the season, on three hits in the first game Saturday, as No. 23 Long Beach State swept a Big West Conference softball doubleheader from Pacific. The 49ers won the first game, 6-0, and completed the sweep, 6-1, in the second game.

The 49ers put the first game away with five runs in the third inning. Christy Tucker had two hits and scored twice for Long Beach State.

Long Beach State (31-16) recorded its ninth consecutive victory in the second game. Amanda Adams, who has hit safely in the last 15 games, put the game away with a two-run homer in the sixth. Pacific is 24-23.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Concordia 11-3, Cal Baptist 10-4--Derrick Bly’s grand slam in the first game capped Concordia’s nine-run seventh inning. Brian Kallemeyn earned the victory in relief for the Eagles (14-25-1).

Senior Chris Wiggins was three for three with two RBIs in the second game and five for six on the day with four RBIs. Concordia led, 3-0, before Cal Baptist scored three times in the sixth and once in the seventh to take the lead.

Biola 6-2, Southern California College 5-1 (2nd game, 7 innings)--SCC rallied for two runs in the ninth to take the lead in the first game, but Biola answered with two in the bottom of the inning.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference track and field championships:

Pool places second in 1,500 meters--Nikee Pool was Southern California College’s top finisher, coming in second in the 1,500 meters at Azusa Pacific. Pool had a time of 4:42.49, two seconds behind Michelle Teodoro of Azusa Pacific. Pool took third place in the 800 (2:15.37) for SCC, which finished fifth overall.

The men’s team, which placed sixth, was led by Tim Hardin, who finished second in the 10,000 in 32:22.9. Azusa Pacific won the men’s and women’s team titles.
