Duggan Will Return as Coach of Edison High Baseball Team

Tom Duggan will be returning to Edison High as the Chargers’ baseball coach, one of four coaching moves announced by the school Thursday.

Duggan, who graduated from Edison in 1981, returned as a walk-on coach for the 1995 season then spent last year as baseball coach at Century High. He replaces Paul Harrell and Dave Tallman.

Corey Kelly, a varsity assistant the last two years, takes over the Charger boys’ basketball team. Kelly graduated from Edison in 1986 and played one year at Orange Coast College. He replaces Jon Borchert, who resigned after 12 seasons with a record of 196-121.

Suzi Mathison, softball coach at South Torrance High this season, fills the same position at Edison. She replaces Harry Schmidt, who stepped down to spend more time with his family. He will remain an assistant football coach.

Shea Abby has been named the girls’ tennis coach. She was the women’s coach at Southern California College this season. She was an All-American at Westmont College in 1995.

Adrian Gomez has been named boys’ basketball coach at Santa Ana High, boys’ Athletic Director Frank Alvarado announced.

Gomez, 31, an assistant varsity coach at Ocean View High the last four years and before that an assistant for one season at Long Beach State and for two seasons at College of the Sequoias. He is a 1989 graduate of Fresno State.

Gomez replaces Ken Walker, who resigned his position in April for personal reasons. The Saints finished 12-13 last season.

Matt Stiles, a forward from Orange Lutheran, has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Concordia. Stiles earned first team all-Southern Section Division V honors and was the Olympic League’s most valuable player.

Kim Gibson, a middle blocker at Trabuco Hills, has signed a letter of intent with The Master’s College. Gibson was honorable mention All-South Coast League last season.
