Banuelos Saves Day for Poly in 2-1 Victory Over San Pedro

Gus Banuelos’ one-out single in the sixth inning scored Abel Salazar from second base with the game-winning run as host Poly High (25-5) defeated San Pedro, 2-1 in a 4-A Division first-round playoff game Tuesday.

In the seventh, Banuelos relieved Jerry Heredia (11-2) with a runner on third base and none out.

Banuelos pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation to earn his second save of the season, grabbing a line drive to end the game.

Steve Guerrero’s run-scoring single in the fifth tied the score for Poly.

In other 4-A first-round games:

Kennedy 2, Westchester 0--Jon Garland (10-1) pitched a two-hitter, struck out eight and issued no walks for the Golden Cougars (28-3) at Kennedy.

Aldo Pinto had a run-scoring single in the first inning and his brother, Omar Pinto, doubled home Garland in the second.

Gary Haynes threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and four walks for the Comets (18-12).

El Camino Real 15, Monroe 1--Shawn Fishman and Kurt Birkins each drove in three runs for the Conquistadores.

Joel Morales and Gavin Bible each had two runs batted in for El Camino Real (19-9).

Carson 1, North Hollywood 0--Jason Wynia hit an inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning for the Colts (23-8) at Carson.

Merrill Dunn pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts and a walk in the loss for the Huskies (12-19).

Banning 8, Sylmar 7--Albert Palma (4-5) surrendered six earned runs in two plus innings and the Spartans (18-8) lost at Sylmar.

Chris Ruley and Carlos Gonzales each had three hits and two RBIs for the Spartans.

Chatsworth 6, University 5--Joe Tillmon hit a two-run double in a six-run second inning for the Chancellors (21-6), who had five of their six hits in the inning.

Granada Hills 16, Palisades 6--Jarrod Penwarden had three hits, including his first home run of the season, scored three times and drove in four runs for the Highlanders (14-14).

Penwarden (2-1) pitched four innings in relief, surrendering two hits and five runs, four of them unearned.

In the 3-A Division:

Bell 13, Verdugo Hills 2--Jeff Martin doubled and drove in one run on a groundout for Verdugo Hills (10-10) in a first-round game at Bell (15-9).
