Buitrago’s One-Hitter Tames Van Nuys West, 7-0

Eric Buitrago pitched a one-hitter as Valley North defeated Van Nuys West, 7-0, in an American Legion District 20 baseball game Tuesday at Chatsworth High.

Buitrago (1-0) threw only 63 pitches while striking out two batters and walking two. He gave up a leadoff single in the top of the third.

Valley North (3-1) scored six runs in the first. The first two came on a double by Danny Phillips and the next three on a double by Tom Morefield. Joe Tillmon added two hits and two stolen bases for Valley North.

Verdugo Hills 3, Studio City 0--Phil Onsaga (2-0) scattered eight hits and went three for three in a District 20 game at Sylmar High.


Onsaga struck out eight and walked one. He also singled, doubled, tripled and scored two runs for Verdugo Hills (4-0).

Newhall-Santa Clarita 11, Quartz Hill 0--Rick Engbrecht (1-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight in a District 20 game at Canyon High that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Chris Coash had two home runs and drove in six runs for Newhall-Santa Clarita (2-0). His three-run home run in the first gave Newhall-Santa Clarita a 3-0 lead and his three-run shot in the second made it 8-0.

Sunland-Tujunga 9, Van Nuys South 2--Marc Lindop had three doubles and five RBIs in a District 20 game at Sunland-Tujunga Senior Field.


Lindop had two-run doubles in the first and third, and a run-scoring double in the fifth for Sunland-Tujunga (4-1).
