Jones, Kent Named City Softball MVPs

Senior softball player Tami Jones of El Camino Real High has been selected the City Section 4-A Division most valuable player.

Jones, a shortstop and pitcher, batted .384 and had a 13-2 record with an 0.94 earned-run average to help lead the Conquistadores to the City title.

Junior catcher Jodi Kent of Verdugo Hills was chosen most valuable player in the 3-A Division. Kent batted .500 with six home runs and 22 stolen bases to pace Verdugo Hills to its second 3-A title in four seasons.

Other players selected to the 4-A first team included Kristen Gutekunst and Ramona Shelburne of El Camino Real, Sandra Durazo, Jennifer Del Real and Kelli Moorman of Kennedy, Jessica Creith and Missy Miller of Granada Hills, Parisa Plant of Chatsworth and Rosie Yeatts of Reseda.

Rita Ortega and Cassie Allison of Van Nuys and Melanie Wood and Rian Standley of Verdugo Hills were selected to the 3-A team.

Neils Ludlow of El Camino Real and Dan Balkey of Verdugo Hills were the coaches of the year.

Track and Field

Middle-distance runner Jennifer Overlock of College of the Canyons and triple-jumper Brandi Prieto of North Torrance High have signed national letters of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Overlock, a 1994 graduate of L.A. Baptist High, ran a personal best of 4 minutes 45.52 seconds to place third in the women’s 1,500 in last month’s State junior college championships.

Prieto placed seventh in the girls’ triple jump in the State championships at Cerritos College on Saturday and has a personal best of 38 feet 11 3/4 inches. She also placed second in the Southern Section Masters Meet and fourth in the Southern Section Division I championships.

Soccer

Coaches Mike Scanlon and Frank Parodi of Moorpark College are hosting a free youth clinic June 22 for players ages 7 to 18. The clinic will run 9 a.m. to noon at Moorpark College.
