Old Rivals Teaming Up in All-Star Doubleheader

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

For years, they were rivals. Now they are teammates.

In the Ventura County all-star volleyball matches tonight, there are many unusual combinations: Thousand Oaks and Royal high players are together on the East team, while Buena and Ventura join forces on the West.

Because it’s a seniors-only affair, these new teammates are very accustomed to each other.

“You’ve looked at them--glared at them--for years, but now it’s kind of fun to be on the same team,” Royal setter Heidi Ferguson said. “The main goal is to have fun, just get everyone together and showcase what we have.”

It appears the East will enjoy itself more in the fourth annual contest, which begins with the girls’ match at 7 p.m., with the boys following at 8. The girls’ team has Ferguson, Lakesha DeBerry and Michelle Lampkin, a talented trio from Royal. Kelly Thompson of Buena is the West’s best.

For the boys, Joe Olsen and Jim Bonelli of Royal, and Scott Sheridan and David Grimm of Thousand Oaks make the East the favorite. Junior Mosones, Riv Amores and Paul Magsino from Channel Islands will lead the West.

Between the best-of-three matches, spectators will have an opportunity to win prizes in a serving contest.
