SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The bigger they are . . . the harder they hit.

Though the East team was far from dominating, height played a difference in the Ventura County boys’ volleyball all-star match Friday night at Moorpark College.

Give the East the advantage in inches and in the score book with a 15-12, 15-13 victory over the West.

In the first game, the West, which dressed only seven players, held surprising 10-7 and 12-11 leads thanks to the Channel Islands trio of Junior Mosones (three solo blocks in the first game), Riv Amores (three kills) and Paul Magsino (four kills).

But the East fought back with its most obvious asset--height.

Ricky Furino (6-foot-2) of Thousand Oaks and Royal’s Joe Olsen (6-4) knocked down quick kills and David Grimm (6-3) of Thousand Oaks added two kills and a solo block in the closing stages of the first game.

Amores, the West’s tallest player at 6-2, staked his team to a 6-1 lead in game two with two kills and two blocks.

But the East rallied again. Scott Sheridan (6-8) of Thousand Oaks High, who will play for Cal State Northridge, nailed seven kills.

“Height’s a big difference,” said Olsen, who had six kills and will play for BYU.

Sheridan had nine kills and Royal’s Kevin Schommer had 10 for the East.

Magsino had 10 kills and Amores seven for the West.
