A 23-year-old Marine was killed after falling from the back of a vending truck, apparently as he tried to hitch a ride without the driver’s knowledge, authorities said Monday.

Cpl. Michael Tuggle, from Amarillo, Texas, appeared to have been intoxicated when he jumped on a truck as it left the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, said California Highway Patrol Officer Angel Johnson.

Tuggle fell from the truck as the driver accelerated to about 25 mph on Trabuco Road south of Sand Canyon Avenue, Johnson said.

He died a short time later at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

Tuggle joined the Marine Corps in February 1992 and has been stationed at El Toro since April 1995, said Capt. Douglas Powell.

Tuggle was assigned to the Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron.
