McEwan Gets Early Ride From UCLA

Quarterback Scott McEwan of Thousand Oaks High has given an oral commitment to attend UCLA.

McEwan, 6 feet 3, was an All-Marmonte League selection last season after passing for 1,854 yards and 13 touchdowns. This will be his third season as the Lancer starter.

Damion Thompson, an All-Valley senior linebacker at Kennedy High last fall, has signed a letter of intent with Washington State.

Track and Field

Rickisha Herron, the 1996 City Section champion in the girls’ triple jump for Birmingham High, has committed to Fresno State.

Herron, who has a personal best of 36 feet 2 1/2 inches, also has a career-best 16-11 1/2 in the long jump. She is expected to focus on the heptathlon.

The Birmingham High boys’ team, paced by Demetrus Patterson and Jose Lorenzo, won the L.A. Games competition at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Braves totaled 144 points, followed by Morningside with 42 and Hawthorne with 40.

Patterson, who will be a junior, won the 100 meters in 11.07 seconds, finished third in the 200 in 23.18 and anchored the victorious 400 relay team that ran 43.75.

Lorenzo, a senior in the fall, won the 800 and 3,200 and finished second in the 1,600.

The first of six summer all-comers meets at Birmingham High begin today at 6 p.m. The other meets are scheduled for July 10, 17, 24 and 31 and August 7.

The meets are open to competitors of all ages and skill levels.

Basketball

Sylmar High’s basketball tournament begins today at 9 a.m. with Long Beach Poly facing Notre Dame in the first game of a six-day tournament.

Area teams make up 14 of the 24 entered, including Canoga Park, Antelope Valley, Hart, Simi Valley and Montclair Prep. Top non-area teams include Fremont, Morningside and St. John Bosco.

Expected to play for Canoga Park, the City Section 3-A runner-up, is David Redmond, who quit the Birmingham team in January and transferred to Canoga Park a few months later.

Baseball

Royal High’s Adrian Mendoza and Brent Egan, Camarillo High’s Nathan Kaup and Rodell Desamparo, and Glendale’s Phil Onsaga were selected to the Division I All-Southern Section team.

Tennis

Cal Lutheran senior Mark Ellis, a Camarillo High graduate who captured the NCAA Division III singles championship in May, has been chosen for the 1996 Rolex-Collegiate All-Star team.

Volleyball

Village Christian has named Bill Schnobrich as girls’ coach.

Schnobrich, who coached at Alverno High, replaces Scott Caulk.
