Flash! Fillmore Does Have NFL Ties

Share

It was stated in a June 23 article about Fillmore High football that the school has produced “no NFL players or any college players of note.”

The statement is not correct. Fillmore did produce at least one NFL star in Don Burroughs of the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.

Burroughs was born and raised in Fillmore and graduated from Fillmore High in 1949, then attended Pasadena City College, Ventura College and Colorado A & M.

Signed as a free agent, he started in the defensive backfield for the Rams for several years and was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles championship team.

Don Burroughs is a credit to his family, his hometown and the NFL.

I know there are many others from Fillmore who were successful in college and I believe there was a least one other who played in the NFL.

However, I do not believe a player of Don Burroughs’ caliber should be overlooked. He was selected to the all-time Ram team and is a member of the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame.
