Toaster Fire Damages House, Kills Pets

Two cats died in a house fire sparked by a faulty appliance Saturday, but no one was injured, authorities said.

The residents of the house, in the 6900 block of Goodland Avenue, were not home when an electrical malfunction in a toaster oven touched off the blaze at 12:30 p.m., said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Humphrey said the cats died of smoke inhalation. The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the structure and $15,000 to personal belongings.

Firefighters were called by a neighbor who was watering the lawn when he noticed smoke coming from the single-story home.

They extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, Humphrey said.
