Newport Harbor Stops Peninsula’s 120-Match Streak

Newport Harbor ended Palos Verdes Peninsula’s 120-match winning streak in girls’ tennis by posting a 13-5 victory Thursday at Peninsula.

Peninsula (2-1) is the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I and has won five consecutive section titles. It was the first loss in the brief history of the school, which opened in 1991.

“It was going to happen sometime,” said co-Coach Jim Hanson, in his sixth year at Peninsula. “The girls played very hard and lost to a better team.”

Vanessa Godbey swept in singles, 7-6, 7-6, 6-2, for Newport Harbor (4-0), ranked sixth in Division I. The Sailors, ranked third in Orange County, clinched the victory by taking a 10-2 lead after two rounds, winning two tiebreakers during the first round and two tiebreakers in the second.

Emily Barker and Brooke Taylor swept in doubles for the Sailors, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3.

In another nonleague match:

Corona del Mar 14, Mater Dei 4--Freshman Melissa Esmero swept in singles for sixth-ranked Mater Dei, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6, but top-ranked Corona del Mar won easily.

El Dorado 14, Troy 4--Melisa Liao and Yetee Osunsanmi swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, for eighth-ranked El Dorado (2-0).

Saddleback 9, Costa Mesa 9 (Saddleback wins on games, 67-66)--Lupe Nieto won the decisive set for host Saddleback (1-1).

Woodbridge 16, Laguna Hills 2--Natalie Exon swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, for visiting Woodbridge, ranked fourth in the county.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Ontario Christian 0--Carmen Fusco had 16 kills for the host Eagles who won, 15-5, 15-11, 15-13.
