East Meets West

The Westlake Warriors and Ventura Cougars each had won their season opener when they matched up Friday in Ventura (C10). . . . Westlake last week trounced Buena, 33-15, in a game that saw senior quarterback Casey Preston complete 14 of 25 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns. Ventura, meanwhile, had rolled over Simi Valley, 27-14. In that game, senior running back Jeramie Jackson rushed for 177 yards and had scoring runs of three and five yards.

Steady Work

The county’s unemployment rate for August was lower than a year ago, cheering experts who said the economy is still expanding slowly (B1). . . . The county has even posted a slight year-to-year increase in the number of manufacturing jobs, which had been hit hard by the recession.

Going Up

A tent city of sorts will be up today along Ventura’s promenade for the annual Beach Party (B1). . . . The event, marketed this year especially to those who might want to beat the heat elsewhere, features food, crafts, music and surfing competitions.
