No. 2 Cougars Shut Down Foothill, 41-0

Second-ranked Capistrano Valley notched its second straight shutout, pounding Foothill, 41-0, Friday in a nonleague game at Tustin High.

“I tell you, defensively, they played real well,” Capistrano Valley coach Dave Brown said. “I’m really pleased with how the defense is coming along.”

The offense, which scored 34 first-half points and has outscored opponents, 117-21, didn’t look too shabby either.

Malaefou MacKenzie rushed 14 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team in receiving with 51 yards, including one for a 33-yard touchdown.

Quarterback Austin Moherman had another strong outing, connecting on eight of nine passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

Foothill (1-2) turned the ball over on it first four possessions, all of which resulted in touchdowns for Capistrano Valley (3-0).

The Cougars struck six minutes into the game on MacKenzie’s 18-yard run.

Foothill fumbled and setting up a one-yard scoring run by Charlie Landrigan.

Moherman got into the action in the second quarter, throwing touchdown passes of 36 yards to Gary Newhouser and 33 yards to MacKenzie. Newhouser also had a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown in the half.

MacKenzie’s third touchdown of the game, a four-yard run, was his sixth of the season and closed out the scoring in the third quarter.

Foothill’s Franklin Haynes, who rushed for 208 yards last week, was limited to 36 yards in 11 carries.
