Saddleback and Long Beach Put Winning Steaks on Line

Saddleback brings its nine-game winning streak to Long Beach, which has a 14-game winning streak, for a Mission Conference football game at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Besides impressive streaks, the teams have some pretty lofty rankings. Long Beach is first in the Southland poll and Saddleback second.

The game features two of the best offenses in the conference. Saddleback is averaging 42 points and 461 yards per game. Long Beach is averaging 37 points and 389 yards.

No longer at rest: Don Johnson, who retired from Cypress as the state’s winningest community college men’s basketball coach after the 1993-94 season, will work as an assistant at Biola University this season.

Johnson, who had a record of 588-259 and won two state titles, joins the staff of Dave Holmquist. Holmquist played for Johnson at Cypress from 1969-71.

She shoots, she scores: Rancho Santiago’s Julie Patton leads the Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer team with nine goals. Teammate Christina Lopez is second with eight. Rancho Santiago is 4-4.

Cypress’ Vedda Desatoff and Irvine Valley’s Jessica Allen each have five goals. Desatoff also has three assists.

They played it: Midway through the fourth quarter of Fullerton’s 67-27 loss to Cerritos Saturday, the Fullerton pep band struck up “I Feel Good.”
