Costa Mesa’s Second Half Crushes First-Year Team

Costa Mesa scored on all five second-half possessions after leading by only one at the half and defeated San Gabriel Gabrielino, 42-6, Thursday night at Newport Harbor High.

Costa Mesa’s defense held the first-year team, which has no seniors, without a first down in the second half. The Mustangs’ offense totaled 425 yards to Gabrielino’s 86.

The Mustangs (2-2) led, 7-6, at the half after Steve Herzog scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Vince Hamade then began the second-half assault when he ran 72 yards for a touchdown on the Mustangs’ first play of the third quarter. Herzog, who rushed for 108 yards in 23 carries, then made it 21-6 on a five-yard run.

The Mustangs added their third touchdown in just over five minutes when quarterback Dan Baume found Ben Felter for a 78-yard touchdown pass.

Herzog scored his third touchdown on a six-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Jeremy Siedsma finished the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown reception from Baume.

Hamade had 105 yards rushing in seven carries for Costa Mesa.
