Second-Half Goals Lift Mission in Soccer

Three second-half goals lifted the Mission College men’s soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Hancock in a Western State Conference opener Friday at Pierce College.

Mission (6-3-4, 1-0 in the conference) forged a 2-2 halftime tie on two goals by Jorge Trejo. In the second half, goals by Luis Mesta, Carlos Cabrera and Felix Avalos broke the game open.

Mesta has 19 goals and Cabrera nine for Mission, which is ranked No. 12 in the state.

Edwin Orpillo and David Silver scored for Hancock (8-3-1, 0-1).

Moorpark 7, Oxnard 1--Joey Medaglia scored twice and Tony Banales, Arron Bettendorf, Mike Sanders, Curtis Silverest and Vahan Minassian each had one goal for the Raiders (5-0-3, 1-0) in a Western State Conference game.

Justin Hanover made seven saves for Moorpark, which is ranked No. 15 in the state.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 2, Bakersfield 0--Vanessa Macen scored in the 46th minute and Britt Christensen scored in the 80th as the Raiders (9-1, 6-0) cruised to a Western State Conference victory at Moorpark.

Ventura 9, Oxnard 1--Mandee Westbrook had two goals and an assist as the Pirates (12-2, 6-1) routed the Condors (0-8-1, 0-7-1) at Oxnard.

Pirates Lori Bailey and Randy Zinn each scored their first collegiate goals.

Ventura plays host to Moorpark at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a pivotal conference game.

Santa Monica 6, Glendale 1--Amanda Hosmann scored and Jennifer D’Entremont had four saves for the Vaqueros (3-6-1, 1-4-1) in a Western State Conference loss at Glendale.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Bell Gardens 20, Burroughs 12--Alfonso Tucay had nine goals, but it was not enough for the Indians (5-12, 0-1) in an Almont League opener at Burroughs.

Calabasas 25, Villanova 2--Jamey Krauss had 10 goals and Jason Brooks added five for the Coyotes (15-3, 4-0) in a Frontier League game at Villanova. Mitch Wechsler had eight saves.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Holy Martyrs d. Buckley, 15-6, 15-8, 15-5--Taline Kotchunian had 10 aces, five kills and nine assists for the Armens (7-3, 2-2) in a Liberty League match at Holy Martyrs. Nora Apelian led the Armens with 10 kills.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. St. Mary’s, 17-15, 15-8, 16-14--Kim Ward had 20 kills and 12 digs, and Nicole Sanderson had 15 kills and 16 digs for the Waves (8-5, 3-1) in the West Coast Conference match at St. Mary’s.

For the Gaels (5-10, 1-4), former Newbury Park High standout Kara McKeown had 10 kills, 10 digs, three aces and four blocks.

Cal Lutheran d. Redlands, 15-4, 15-9, 15-7--Tracy Little had 13 kills and 12 digs at Cal Lutheran to help the Regals (12-3, 8-0) remain unbeaten in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Cal Lutheran setter Liz Martinez had 28 assists.

It was the Regals’ 21st consecutive conference victory.

Moorpark d. Pierce, 15-7, 15-2, 15-8--Michele Capuano led the Raiders (8-2, 6-0) with 12 kills in a Western State Conference match at Moorpark. Kristin Lee had 10 kills and three aces, Crystal Crawford had nine kills and Julie Watson had 33 assists for Moorpark.
