Quartz Hill’s Court Gains Two of a Kind
Seniors Kenya Corley and Tiffany Coke, who were expected to be the top returning players on the Antelope Valley High girls’ basketball team, have transferred to Quartz Hill.
Corley averaged 13.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.6 blocked shots a game for Antelope Valley last season. She also won the long jump and placed second in the high jump in the Southern Section Division I track and field championships in May.
Coke averaged 7.9 points, 4.3 assists and 3.7 steals.
Both players have been enrolled at Quartz Hill since the start of the semester, but Corley’s eligibility was in question until she was cleared by the Antelope Valley Union High School District last Friday and the Southern Section on Monday.
“It is a legitimate open-enrollment transfer,” Southern Section Commissioner Dean Crowley said. “There had been some contention by her old school that it was purely an athletic transfer, but the [Antelope Valley Union High School District] investigated it and found that that was not the case.”
Crowley added that the school district said there was no recruiting involved in Corley’s transfer.
The addition of Corley to the Quartz Hill track team could make the Rebels a contender in the 1997 Southern Section Division I championships.
Quartz Hill senior Michelle Perry is the defending Division I champion in the 100-meter high hurdles and 300 lows, and junior Danielle Day could contend for the division title in 3,200.
Third-round leader: Chris Zambri of Camarillo took a one-shot lead after the third round of the first stage of Tour Qualifying at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano on Thursday.
Zambri shot a 70 for a three-round total of 210, one stroke ahead of Jade Work and Barry Conser. Former Cal State Northridge standout Jeff Sanday is two strokes back.
Palmdale loses QB: Palmdale High junior quarterback Grant Livermont had surgery on his right shoulder and will be lost for the remainder of the season. Livermont dislocated his shoulder in a 27-14 nonleague loss to Hart on Oct. 14.
