Moorpark’s Hernandez, Mission’s Barajas Set Pace
Individual winners Eleazar Hernandez of Moorpark College and Marisol Barajas of Mission led their respective men’s and women’s cross-country teams to victories Friday in the second Western State Conference meet of the season.
Hernandez, a sophomore from Camarillo High, clocked 20 minutes 14 seconds over the four-mile course at Hart Park in Bakersfield as the Raiders totaled 25 points to turn back second-place Ventura (77) and third-place Mission (99).
Moorpark, which also won the first WSC meet of the season, placed eight runners among the top 12 finishers.
In the women’s race, freshman Barajas clocked 18:17 over the three-mile course as Mission totaled 36 points to win its second consecutive WSC meet.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Moorpark d. Ventura, 15-11, 17-15, 2-15, 15-8--Kristin Lee had 27 kills and 20 digs to lead Moorpark (10-2, 8-0) in a Western State Conference match at Ventura.
Pepperdine d. San Francisco, 15-12, 15-11, 15-2--Sophomore middle blocker Anna Witkowski led the Waves (9-6, 4-2) with 15 kills and six blocks in a West Coast Conference victory over visiting San Francisco (5-14, 1-5).
Cal Lutheran d. Occidental, 16-14, 15-6, 15-7--Tracy Little had 15 kills and 15 digs for the Regals (16-3, 11-0) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Occidental (5-8, 4-6).
Karen Kasper added 12 kills and Liz Martinez had 40 assists for Cal Lutheran, which has 24 consecutive conference victories.
HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO
La Canada 8, Whittier 2--David Stoeckly and Brendan Naeve each scored four goals for the Spartans (10-12).
Royal 25, Newbury Park 3--Chris Richeson scored eight goals and Nate Ball added seven for the Highlanders (17-5, 5-0) in a Marmonte League match.
Agoura 13, Thousand Oaks 5--Noah Bookman and Mitch Dexter each scored three goals for the Chargers (15-6, 4-1).
MEN’S SOCCER
The Master’s 2, Westminster (Utah) 0--Bryan Lee and Joel Murphy scored second-half goals for the Mustangs (13-3-2) in a nonconference game at Master’s.
Mission 2, Glendale 2--Luis Mesta and Mohammad Latifi scored second-half goals to salvage a tie for the Free Spirit (6-3-6, 1-0-2) in a Western State Conference game at Glendale.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Moorpark 4, Oxnard 1--Britt Christensen scored three goals to lead Moorpark (11-2, 8-1) in a Western State Conference game at Oxnard (0-9-1, 0-8-1).
Ventura 6, Glendale 0--Mandee Westbrook scored three goals and Sarah Roach added two for the Pirates (12-2, 8-1) in a Western State Conference game at Ventura.
