Newport Harbor Wins in Tennis

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, won seven of nine doubles sets in an 11-7 victory over third-ranked Corona del Mar in a Sea View League girls’ tennis match Thursday at Corona del Mar High.

Freshmen Chelsea Godbey and Amanda Collopy swept, 7-5, 6-2, 6-0, and Brooke Taylor and Emily Barker improved to 36-0 in doubles, sweeping, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 for Newport Harbor (17-1, 8-1 in league), ranked second in the Southern Section Division I.

Nina Vaughan swept in singles, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6, for Corona del Mar (15-3, 6-3), ranked No. 1 in Division I.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 19, Katella 2--Armi Breton swept in singles, 6-1, 6-1, and teamed with Cynthia Ishihara to win in doubles, 6-4, for Cypress (10-8, 6-4), which advanced to the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.

In South Coast League boys’ cross-country:

Mission Viejo 28, Mater Dei 28 (Mission Viejo wins on faster sixth runner)--Mark Gleason set a course record with a time of 14 minutes 58 seconds over three miles at Laguna Niguel Regional Park to help unranked Mission Viejo (4-0) defeat No. 9 Mater Dei (4-1).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 22, Esperanza 35--Dan Gaston won in 15:02 over the three-mile course at Yorba Regional Park for Huntington Beach (2-3), ranked fourth in the county. The Oilers this week forfeited three league victories because of an ineligible runner and now must finish no worse than second at the Sunset League finals to advance to the section prelims. Esperanza is 4-1.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ cross-country:

Costa Mesa 22, Laguna Beach 37--Laguna Beach’s Lindsay Buwalda won the three-mile race at Mason Park in 17:33.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine wins two--Irvine’s Erin Zehntner finished second in 18:03 at Woodbridge High as the second-ranked Vaqueros (5-0) edged Santa Margarita, 26-29, in a double-dual meet. Irvine also defeated Woodbridge, 25-34. Katie Nuanes won in 17:32 for seventh-ranked Santa Margarita (3-2), which defeated Woodbridge, 24-31.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 16, Trabuco Hills 44--Sydney Leonard won in 18:38 for top-ranked Dana Hills (5-0) on the three-mile course at Trabuco Hills High.

In the field hockey Tournament of Champions:

Marina 2, Edison 1--Emily Frederick scored with eight minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie for Marina (15-2-4), which upset top-seeded Edison. Elizabeth Ewing scored a first-half goal for the Vikings, who advanced to Saturday’s final to play Santiago.

Santiago 2, La Verne Bonita 1 (OT)--Ivonne Monroy scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Amber Puskas, seven minutes into overtime, for Santiago (11-4-3). Puskas scored with four minutes remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime for the Cavaliers.

In Century League girls’ volleyball:

Foothill 3, El Modena 1--Becky Radomski had 14 kills for Foothill (9-3, 6-2), which won, 9-15, 16-14, 15-10, 16-14. El Modena is 13-1, 7-1.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 3, Sonora 0--Kirsten Berg had 11 kills to help La Habra (9-3, 8-0) clinch the league title with a 15-12, 15-6, 15-4 victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 3, Laguna Hills 0--Third-ranked Laguna Beach (17-1, 8-0) posted its 15th consecutive victory, winning, 15-8, 15-3, 16-14. Tayyiba Haneef had 14 kills for visiting Laguna Hills (10-3, 6-2).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 3, Esperanza 0--Julie Hinsche had eight kills for the top-ranked Oilers (15-1, 7-1), who won, 15-4, 15-1, 15-6.

Fountain Valley 3, Edison 0--Larissa Carter had 14 kills for the second-ranked Barons (12-2, 7-1), who won, 15-7, 15-4, 15-10.
