Top-Ranked Golden West Loses to Long Beach in Water Polo

Long Beach, ranked second in the state, defeated top-ranked Golden West, 10-9, in the title game of the South Coast Conference water polo tournament Saturday at Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach.

Long Beach took a 7-5 halftime lead and the Rustlers never recovered.

Long Beach (16-4-2) had lost its four previous games against the Rustlers (28-1) this season.

In Mission Conference football:

Riverside 37, Orange Coast 21--Riverside scored 21 points in the second quarter and won the Central Division game.

Down 7-0 early, Chet Walker scored on touchdown runs of three and 34 yards to give OCC (1-7, 0-5) a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.

Brent Meier scored on a one-yard run to give Riverside the first of its three second-quarter scores.

Mt. San Antonio 42, Golden West 10--Eric Shine, a former Savanna High standout, rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns for Mt. San Antonio (6-1). Teammate Mik Moschetti completed nine passes for 171 yards.

Golden West (1-6) scoring on a three-yard run by Charles Chatman with 22 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 14-10.

Shine’s 64-yard touchdown run with 7:03 left in the third quarter sparked a second-half surge that produced four touchdowns.

At the Community College North-South All-Star Wrestling Classic:

South 21, North 16--Rancho Santiago’s Alfredo Frausto defeated Mario Castillo of West Valley, 16-10, at 150 pounds for the South. Golden West’s Raphael Davis defeated Chabot’s Peter Matheson, 9-5, at 177 pounds, breaking a tie to give the South a 15-12 lead.

Golden West’s Tito Ortiz also won, pinning Nathaniel Nash of Modesto in 2:42 at 190 pounds.

At the Johnny Orognen cross-country invitational:

Orange Coast finishes second--Donna Mills of host Orange Coast covered the 3.1-mile course at Fairview Park in 19:33 to place second, 10 seconds behind winner Liz Robles of Mt. San Antonio.
