A look at the today’s key matchups

HIGH SCHOOL

* CAMARILLO (6-2, 5-0) vs. THOUSAND OAKS (7-0-1, 5-0)

At Thousand Oaks High, 7:30 p.m.

Quarterbacks who might someday meet in the Pacific 10 Conference will square off in a game that will determine at least a tie for the Marmonte League championship. Joe Borchard, who will choose between Stanford and Cal, has led Camarillo to six victories in a row. Scott McEwan, already committed to UCLA, has kept Thousand Oaks unbeaten with big-play ability. Although he has thrown only 130 passes compared to Borchard’s 234, McEwan averages 12.4 yards per pass and 20.8 yards per completion. Borchard averages 8.1 and 15.1. Camarillo’s Mike Anger has 61 catches for 810 yards and 11 touchdowns. Barrett Grindle of Thousand Oaks has 29 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns. Thousand Oaks has the league’s best defense, anchored by lineman Chance Redmond, linebacker Jud Southwell, and safeties Josh Casillas and Matt Hoffman. Camarillo’s defense, porous early, has improved. Eugene Jackson has three interceptions.

* PALMDALE (7-1, 2-0) vs. ANTELOPE VALLEY (5-2, 1-1)

At Antelope Valley High, 7:30 p.m.

Palmdale, 0-10 two years ago, is on the threshold of at least a share of a Golden League championship. Standing in the Falcons’ way is two-time defending champion Antelope Valley, which was upset, 7-0, by Highland last week. Running back Eric Mobley and two-way lineman Sal Medina are back for the Antelopes after sitting out last week’s loss with ankle injuries. Mobley averages 6.8 yards per carry and his presence will take some defensive attention from Tony Walker, who has 771 yards and eight touchdowns rushing. Palmdale’s Jan Brown has rushed for 758 yards and seven touchdowns, with Jason Anderson adding 718 and eight touchdowns. The Falcons have beaten four opponents by an average score of 42-11, including a 38-7 rout of Highland, since a 27-14 nonleague setback to Hart.

* LITTLEROCK (6-2, 1-1) vs. HIGHLAND (6-3, 2-1)

At Palmdale High, 7:30 p.m.

Before the season, nobody predicted this game between the Golden League’s newest schools, both in their sixth varsity seasons, would have playoff possibilities for both teams. Highland, which shocked Antelope Valley, 7-0, will clinch at least the league’s No. 2 playoff spot with a victory. Littlerock, which comes off a bye after being routed by Antelope Valley, 35-6, must win tonight or next week against Palmdale for a chance at an automatic berth. Look for the Lobos to run the ball with Michael Woods, who has 886 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns, and Devon Reese, who has 807 yards and 10 touchdowns. Highland’s Camy Smith has passed for 1,335 yards and 12 touchdowns. Will Demps has 37 receptions and leads the region with eight interceptions, three of which he has returned for touchdowns.

* DOS PUEBLOS (8-0, 5-0) vs. OXNARD (6-0-2, 4-0-1)

At Oxnard High, 7:30 p.m.

Oxnard can take over first place in the Channel League and grab the inside track to its first league championship since 1986. But the Yellowjackets must contend with quarterback Anthony Ramos, arguably the league’s best player. Ramos, a two-year starter, has passed for 2,132 yards and 26 touchdowns, and has rushed for 616 yards and 10 touchdowns. His favorite target is wide receiver Jason Stone, who has 37 receptions for 750 yards and 12 touchdowns. Oxnard’s Desmond Davis, who leads Ventura County in rushing with 1,213 yards, ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns last week in a victory over Rio Mesa. Chad Pierson contributed 178 yards and two touchdowns. Oxnard has intercepted 11 passes.

* BURROUGHS (7-1, 3-0) vs. HART (6-2, 3-0)

At College of the Canyons, 7:30 p.m.

Few fans might have expected this to be a premier matchup in the Foothill League, but then who could have guessed J.K. Scott of Burroughs would pass for 2,073 yards and 24 touchdowns with only four interceptions? “He’s a great athlete,” said Hart Coach Mike Herrington. “He makes things happen.” Most of the time, he makes them happen with Glenn Adriatico, who has caught 54 passes for 939 yards and 13 touchdowns. Hart’s Travis Carroll has passed for 1,819 yards and 20 touchdowns with four interceptions. His favorite target is Cody Joyce, who has 46 catches for 651 yards and six touchdowns. Hart is looking to extend its streak of five consecutive league titles. Burroughs is seeking its first title this decade. Hart, which has surrendered only 16 points in its last three games, has arguably been the best team in the region since a 24-10 victory over Loyola four weeks ago.

* NORTH HOLLYWOOD (4-4, 3-2) vs. VAN NUYS (4-4, 3-2)

At Van Nuys High, 7:30 p.m.

These Valley Pac-8 Conference teams are vying for a playoff berth. Both teams employ a ground-oriented offense and have less than 400 passing yards for the season. North Hollywood running back Dante Clay--with 1,343 yards--has been near unstoppable in the Huskies’ double-wing offense. Clay, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior and Division I prospect, is coming off a 323-yard performance against winless Poly and is the area’s leading City scorer with 94 points. Carlos Mack, a 5-9, 160-pound senior for Van Nuys, has rushed for 766 yards and eight touchdowns. But Mack may find the going tough against the Huskies’ defense, which ranks second behind Sylmar against the run.
