A Major Victory for Generals

It was a safe bet that the party Friday night for the Washington High football team would go past curfew.

“It will be crazy, I mean crazy,” said quarterback Johnny Marin Friday afternoon.

Said running back Terrence Peters: “Wild, real wild.”

There was cause for celebration after the Generals defeated Southern Pacific Conference rival Dorsey, 21-12, at Washington.

The homecoming victory avenged a 63-19 thrashing last season, and, more importantly, the victory moved Washington into a tie with Crenshaw for second place in the conference and almost assures it a spot in the upcoming Division 4-A playoffs.

“It feels like we haven’t beat Dorsey in a long time, almost forever,” Washington Coach Richard Mull said. “This is a big one.”

The big one during the game was a 52-yard touchdown pass play from Marin to receiver Jerry Webster early in the fourth quarter. It came three minutes after Marin gave Washington (5-4, 4-2) the lead, 15-12, on a one-yard run, and deflated a Dorsey squad that will need luck to make the playoffs and defend its City Section 4-A title.

The Generals ran at the Dons (4-5, 3-3) with Gregory King (14 carries for 113 yards) and Peters (10 for 94, one touchdown), but still Dorsey took a 12-8 lead on Roderick Foreman’s five-yard run, the end result of a Washington fumble at its own 23.

Runs of 22 and 25 yards by King and Peters set up Marin’s touchdown.

A defense led by linebacker Curtis Coleman (14 tackles, three sacks) held Dorsey on its next possession, and three plays later Marin connected with Webster.
