More of Same for Ventura Women, 79-53

Ventura College picked up where it left off last season with a 79-53 victory over Harbor on Friday night in the opening round of the Chaffey women’s basketball tournament.

Freshman and former Crescenta Valley High standout Amirah Leonard scored 16 points for the Pirates, defending state champions who had a 35-0 record last season.

Brianna Kanongata’a scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds for Ventura. Cindi Jensen, Adria Sneed and April Garrish each scored 12 points.

Valley 68, Glendale 38--Shawanda Hotchkiss, most valuable player in the Western State Conference a year ago, had 24 points, seven rebounds and four steals, and Jacque Tennies added 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for the Monarchs in the first round of the Mt. San Antonio College tournament.

Karen Shrirkjian had 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Vaqueros.

Moorpark 74, Compton 64--Theresa Rough had 23 points and 21 rebounds to help the Raiders win in overtime at Moorpark. Rough made 10 of 15 shots.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

CS Northridge 66, German National team 49--The Matadors’ full-court defense forced 30 turnovers but 43% shooting from the free-throw line and various other gaffes had Coach Bobby Braswell upset after the exhibition before 392 at Matador Gym.

Northridge pulled away in the second half on the strength of a 18-7 run out of the locker room. Derrick Higgins had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Northridge.

The Matadors, who have won both of their preseason exhibitions, made just 42% of their shots, 36% in the first half.

Marvin Willoughby scored 12 points for German National team.

Saddleback 77, Valley 72--Tyreece Basey and Benny Hoang each scored 14 points in defeat for the Monarchs in the first round of the Fullerton tournament.

Hoang had seven assists for Valley, which took a 63-60 lead with less than four minutes remaining after trailing, 59-40, midway through the second half.

Glendale 96, San Bernardino Valley 88--Coach Brian Beauchemin recorded the 300th victory of his career for the Vaqueros in the Victor Valley tournament.

Carl Biehl had 30 points for Glendale, and forward Ryan Sylva added 24 points and six rebounds.

Barstow 108, Oxnard 97--The Condors lost their opener at the Barstow College tournament despite 32 points from Chris Wooten and 21 points and 12 rebounds by Raymond Palmer.

Rancho Santiago 53, Canyons 52--The Dons’ Mark Saukkola hit two free throws with three seconds left at Canyons, which got a technical foul for calling a timeout it did not have.

Moorpark 93, Pasadena 83--Marques Penna had 21 points for the Raiders in a first-round game at the Cerro Coso tournament.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Lutheran d. Pomona-Pitzer, 11-15, 15-8, 12-15, 15-11, 15-11--Tracy Little had 19 kills and 20 digs for the Regals (21-3), ranked third in the nation, in a NCAA Division III West Regional semifinal at UC San Diego.

Moorpark d. Santa Barbara, 15-11, 16-14, 15-11--The Raiders clinched a share of the WSC title at Santa Barbara behind the play of Kristen Lee (24 kills, 18 digs), Michele Capuano (12 kills, 10 digs) and Julie Watson (53 assists).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Bakersfield 1, Oxnard 0--Jamie Larma’s goal five minutes into the match lifted the Renegades in a WSC match at Oxnard (0-15-1).

Moorpark 6, Santa Monica 0--Vanessa Macen scored three goals for the Raiders in a WSC match at Moorpark (14-3-0, 12-2-0).

Cuesta 3, Glendale 0--The Vaqueros (4-7-2, 2-7-2) did not have a shot on goal in a WSC match at Cuesta, which got three goals from Katy Peterson.

MEN’S SOCCER

Santa Barbara 2, Mission 1--Flemming Sorensen scored her second goal of the game for the Vaqueros (16-2-1, 8-1-0) with two minutes left in a WSC match.

Carlos Cabrera scored for the Free Spirit (8-6-6, 3-3-3).
