Cal Lutheran Loses in Regional

Tracy Little had 13 kills and 19 digs for the Cal Lutheran women’s volleyball team, but the Regals were eliminated from the NCAA Division III West regional championships by UC San Diego, 15-6, 15-11, 16-14, Saturday night at UC San Diego.

Top-seeded Cal Lutheran (21-4), the Division III national runner-up last season, got eight kills from Karen Kasper and 28 assists from setter Liz Martinez.

The Regals, who were ranked third in the division and had won 11 consecutive matches, trailed throughout the first game, and second-seeded UC San Diego (24-6) rallied to win the last two games.

Cal State Northridge d. Idaho State, 15-5, 15-6, 15-8--Nancy Ma had 20 kills and 19 digs to lead the Matadors to a Big Sky Conference victory at Idaho State.

Getty Dimitrova had 12 kills, and Allwyn Fitzpatrick had 10 kills and 13 digs for the Matadors (20-9, 16-0 in conference). Amy Gillis added 15 digs.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Sequoias 101, Ventura 91--The defending state champion Pirates got into foul trouble and committed 17 turnovers in losing their season opener, a nonconference game at Sequoias.

Dajuan Wilson led Ventura with 16 points, and Sam Turks added nine points and eight assists. John Bynum scored 36 for Sequoias, making 18 of 26 free throws.

Moorpark 80, San Diego Mesa 78--The Raiders (2-0) led by as many as 11 points in the second half and held on in the championship game of the Cerro Coso Tournament.

Cameron Henderson scored 15 points and Ben Tryk added 12 for Moorpark. Marques Pena, who had eight points, was named most valuable player of the tournament.

Valley 80, El Camino 64--Gianandrea Marcaccini scored 20 points and Oke Ogoke had 15 points and seven assists to lead the Monarchs (1-1) in the Fullerton Tournament. Valley advanced to today’s consolation championship game.

Riverside 89, Oxnard 84--The Condors (0-2) blew a five-point halftime lead in the second round of the Barstow Tournament.

Oxnard pulled within one with nine seconds left when Chris Jackson (12 points) sank a three-point basket, was fouled and converted a free throw. Chris Wooten led Oxnard with 25 points.

Porterville 87, Glendale 69--Carl Biel scored 21 points and Ara Sarkis had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Vaqueros (1-1) in a second-round loss in the Victor Valley Tournament.

Javien Moore also scored 10 points for Glendale. Porterville (2-0) got 21 points from Danny Maxie.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 98, Orange Coast 58--Brianna Kanongata’a had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates (2-0) in the semifinals of the Chaffey Tournament.

Adria Sneed added 18 points for defending state champion Ventura, which has won 37 consecutive games.

Canyons 83, Fullerton 60--Kyetra Brown had 22 points, 13 assists and six steals for host Canyons in its season opener. Brown shot nine of 16 from the field.

Mt. San Antonio 67, Valley 53--Shawanda Hotchkiss scored 31 points on 12-of-24 shooting, but the Monarchs lost in the championship game of the Mt. San Antonio Tournament.

Valley (2-1) made only 19 of 57 shots from the field and was outscored, 37-25, in the second half after trailing, 30-28, at halftime.

Irvine Valley 81, Antelope Valley 51--Chanel Edwards scored 18 points, but Antelope Valley (1-1) could not make up a 44-15 halftime deficit in the championship game of the Santa Barbara Tournament.

MEN’S SWIMMING

UC Santa Barbara 156, Cal State Northridge 85--Mike Cann won the 50-, 100- and 200-freestyle events for the Matadors in a nonconference meet at Northridge.
