Six years after Derrick Thomas set an NFL record by sacking Dave Krieg seven times in one game, Thomas had Krieg in his clutches again.

This time, Kansas City’s pass-rush specialist sacked Krieg twice in a 14-10 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, making the 17-year veteran the most-sacked quarterback in league history.

“It was only fitting that I be the one to get him for the record,” said Thomas. “He got to be written down in my record. Now I’m written down in his record.”

Krieg, who played for the Chiefs (8-3) in 1992-93, entered the game tied with Fran Tarkenton with 483 sacks. He avoided the pressure of the Chiefs (8-3) until the fourth quarter, when Thomas got him twice in three plays.

In the 1990 game in which Thomas set the record, Krieg was playing for Seattle. Despite being chased around by Thomas all game, Krieg threw a touchdown pass on the final play of the game to give the Seahawks a 17-16 victory.

With less than four minutes to go Sunday and Chicago trailing 14-10, Krieg launched a pass into the end zone, but safety Mark Collins made the interception, wrestling the ball away from Bobby Engram.

“I just went for the ball and wasn’t going to be denied,” Collins said. “I just took the ball from him on the way down. . . . I just snatched it from him.”

After the Bears took a 7-0 lead on Raymont Harris’ 14-yard run, the Chiefs came back with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Steve Bono to Chris Penn and a 10-yard scoring run by Kimble Anders for a 14-7 lead.

“I thought we were running the ball well in the first half,” Harris said. “But we had a lot of three-and-out, and that makes it tough to get it going.”
