Cross-Country State Meet Today

McFarland High of Kern County goes for an unprecedented fifth consecutive boys’ state cross-country title today at Woodward Park in Fresno. No other school has won five titles in a row.

The meet will include five enrollment-based divisions for the first time. The state championships consisted of three divisions from 1987-89 and four from 1990-95. McFarland will compete in Division V.

Individually, Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa and Elaine Canchola of Ojai Nordhoff are the lone defending champions. Stamps competes in Division I and Canchola in Division III.

Ryan Deane of Palos Verdes Peninsula is a favorite in the boys’ Division I race.
