Moorpark Upsets Cerritos to Reach State Quarterfinals

The Moorpark College women’s volleyball team, seeded fifth, upset No. 4 Cerritos, 15-10, 15-9, 6-15, 9-15, 15-12, in the second round of the Southern California Junior College Regional tournament Saturday night at Cerritos.

And now the Raiders’ remarkable season will take them to the state quarterfinals Friday at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.

Moorpark (17-3) started with only seven players and lost its first two matches before capturing the first Western State Conference championship in school history.

“We had a number of things go wrong. A couple of girls we thought were going to come out didn’t,” Coach Steve Burkhart said.

“The girls have worked tremendously hard and, I’ve got to tell you, they continue to amaze me,” Burkhart added.

Kristin Lee had 24 kills and Michelle Capuano added 12 for the Raiders. Julie Watson had 54 assists. Cerritos finished 15-5.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

South Carolina 76, Pepperdine 72--The Waves (1-1) forged a 36-36 halftime tie but could not stay with the Gamecocks (2-1) in a nonconference game at Pepperdine.

Angie White and Lisa Siders each scored 17 points for Pepperdine. White had nine assists and Siders 10 rebounds.

Samantha Rigley had 15 points and Jenny Frank scored 11 for the Waves.

H Nikki Miars led South Carolina with 25 points and Lisa Williams scored 13.

Cal Lutheran 81, Bethany 68--Melissa Wood poured in 36 points to lead the Regals (3-0) past host Bethany (0-3) in a nonconference game at Bethany.

Center Evi Orologas had 16 points and 16 rebounds and Anita Richardson had 14 points for Cal Lutheran, which led, 41-26, at halftime.

Tina Carrillo led Bethany with 21 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Kennedy 72, Wilson 15--The Golden Cougars cruised to a 19-0 first-quarter lead and a 45-4 halftime lead in a first-round win at the Washington Tournament. Banessa Dunn had 30 points, 12 rebounds and 11 steals. Tammy Barber added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
