Coach: Bob Chavez (fourth year).

1995-96: 17-5-4, 7-1-2 in the Sea View League, lost to Canyon Springs, 2-0, in the second round of the section Division III playoffs.

Key returners: Gonzo Bonilla, defender, Jr.; Ronnie Davis, forward, first-team all-league, Sr.; Wade Fraser, midfielder, first-team all-league, Sr.; Patrick O’Brien, defender, Sr.; Brian Roney, forward, Sr.; Josh Saunders, goalkeeper, So.; Brian Stucker, forward, Sr.; Andy Valderrama, midfielder, Sr.; Tim George, stopper, Sr.

Key newcomers: Justin Lang, defender, Fr.; Julian Gaitan, midfielder, So.

Outlook: It’s time to put up or shut up for El Toro, which returns eight starters and probably is the county’s most talented team. The Chargers have had essentially the same core of players for four years but have never reached the semifinals. “If they stay focused, they’re going to be a very tough team to beat,” Chavez said. “I feel confident about us at every position. I don’t see a weakness.” Chavez has hinted he might leave after the season. “I’d be very disappointed if we don’t win [the section]” he said. “This is the best team I’ve had.”
