The Ventura Mariners hockey team will play...

The Ventura Mariners hockey team will play host to the Cleveland Barons in a three-game series beginning tonight at the Easy Street Arena in Simi Valley.

The Mariners, a USA Hockey Junior B team of players 16 to 20 years old, is 12-10 this season and is in second place in the Western States Hockey League with an 11-2 record.

They will be stepping up a level to play the Barons, a Junior A team that has an overall record of 16-11-1.

Games will take place at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday, and at 1:45 p.m. Sunday. The arena is at 131 West Easy St.

The Southern Section tennis tournament continues today at 9 a.m. at the Racquet Club of Irvine (see story, page 12).

The City Section tournament continues with second-round action of individual play today at 1 p.m. at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

In high school basketball, dozens of local teams continue play in the Simi Valley, Burbank-Hoover and Saugus boys’ tournaments, and at the Fillmore and Paraclete girls’ tournaments.

Other high school teams from the regions are competing in boys’ tournaments at Nordhoff, Cerritos Gahr, Loyola, Providence, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo high schools, and at girls’ tournaments at Crescenta Valley, Bakersfield South, Bellflower, Buckley, Etiwanda, Beverly Hills and Irvine Woodbridge high schools.

In boys’ high school soccer, several local teams will compete in tournaments at Burroughs and Lancaster high schools.

In men’s junior college basketball, play continues at the Antelope Valley College tournament. Consolation games will be played at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Semifinals are at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
