Souza Leads Dana Hills’ Unbeaten Band

Pedio Souza made a shot at the buzzer to give Dana Hills a 64-63 nonleague boys’ basketball victory over host Santa Margarita (2-2) Wednesday.

Dana Hills (4-0), which trailed, 38-30, at the half, outscored Santa Margarita, 17-6, in the fourth quarter. Souza led all scorers with 23 points. Teammate Reid Speigl added 11 points, including three three-pointers.

Brad Gloger had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

In other nonleague games:

El Dorado 47, Troy 46--Troy outscored visiting El Dorado, 23-10, in the fourth quarter, but missed a shot at the buzzer.

La Habra 90, Whittier Pioneer 75--Josh Fischer had 36 points and 16 rebounds for La Habra (3-0).

El Toro 73, Aliso Niguel 60--Frabrizio Mendiola scored 28 points for El Toro (6-0).

In the Century Tournament:

Magnolia 58, Palm Desert 54 (OT)--Brian Morse hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Erick McGhee scored six points in the extra period for Magnolia (4-2) in a pool-play game.

In Converse Classic pool-play games:

Mission Viejo 78, Moreno Valley Canyon Springs 66--Shemmar Frazier tallied career highs with 16 points and 15 rebounds for Mission Viejo (4-2).

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Saddleback 67, Santiago 62--Terrell Foster had 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for Saddleback (3-3).

In the Fullerton tournament:

La Mirada 82, Bolsa Grande 77--Ryan Pham had 17 points and nine rebounds for Bolsa Grande (2-4) in a pool-play game.

In the La Jolla Tournament:

Capistrano Valley Christian 72, Calipatria 55--Andrew Jennings scored a school-record 43 points--33 in the second half--for the Eagles (4-1), who led, 43-42, after three quarters. Jennings scored 20 points in the fourth quarter.

In the La Quinta Tournament:

Katella 55, Huntington Beach 41--Jehnvany Barraza led all scorers with 25 points for Katella. Teammate Edgar Garcia added 14 points. Nick Sinclair led Huntington Beach with 12 points.

In the Tournament of Champions:

Mater Dei 68, Gardena Serra 47--Tom Lippold scored 21 points and Kevin Augustine added 20 points and nine rebounds for Mater Dei, which only led, 30-28, at halftime, before pulling away for the second-round victory.

Servite 63, Palmdale Highland 61--Chris Killens scored 14 points for Servite (3-3), which held Highland to one free throw in the final 1 1/2 minutes of a consolation-round game.

In the Vista Tournament:

El Modena 76, Temecula Valley 63--Tommy Ngo had 22 points and 11 rebounds for El Modena (2-4) in a pool-play game.

In the Brea Olinda girls’ basketball tournament:

Brea Olinda 70, Mission Viejo 38--Jennifer Saari scored 14 points, including four first-quarter three-pointers, for Brea (2-0) in a second-round victory. Tami Higham scored 21 points for Mission Viejo (3-1), which trailed, 36-16, at halftime.

In the Estancia tournament:

Edison 51, Irvine 36--Freshman Michelle Zylstra scored a game-high 16 points for Edison (3-0). She added five rebounds and five block shots. Teammate Shauna Steward scored 12 points and had six steals and five assists.

El Modena 10, Tustin 9 (sudden death)--Anais Cunha scored her sixth goal in the sudden-death period for visiting El Modena (2-0).
