Montclair Prep Rally Turns Bishop Diego Upside Down

Showing the experience of consecutive appearances in the state Division V final, Montclair Prep erased a 19-point third-quarter deficit and defeated Bishop Diego, 61-58, Thursday night in the semifinals of the Faith Baptist tournament.

Rocky Steryo sank five three-pointers and Micah Cohen made four for the Mounties (4-0), who trailed, 45-26, with 1 minute 43 seconds left in the third quarter.

Steryo, who had 21 points, made three-point shots on consecutive possessions to pull his team to within 54-51 with 2:24 to play.

Cohen, who added 14 points, duplicated Steryo’s feat with two three-pointers that pulled his team to within 58-57 with 1:09 remaining. Cohen scored his other three points on free throws after getting fouled on a three-point shot.

Montclair Prep, which was outscored, 16-4, to start the third quarter, took the lead for good, 59-58, on two free throws with 49 seconds left by Darin Brock, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mounties, who will play Moorpark in the tournament final Saturday night, played without guard Robert Bowens, who injured his knee in Thursday’s victory over Bell-Jeff.

Moorpark 60, Chaminade 50--Keith Donahue made six of 10 three-pointers, including four in the third quarter, for the Musketeers (4-1) in the other Faith Baptist semifinal.

Donahue and Kevin Lawrence each had 17 points for Moorpark. Justin Stewart had 16 points for Chaminade (4-2).

The Eagles played without starting guard Kevin Frame, who injured his foot last week during the Simi Valley tournament.

Calabasas 98, Lighthouse 64--Bobby Baumann had 32 points and six steals, and Ryan Coleman added 26 points and 12 assists for the Coyotes (5-1) in the Faith Baptist tournament.

Canoga Park 79, Cleveland 70--Carloes Harper had 28 points and the Hunters (5-2) advanced to the semifinals of the Beverly Hills tournament.

Harper had consecutive dunks in the fourth quarter as Canoga Park surged to a 68-56 lead with five minutes remaining.

Donald Holt had 34 points for the Cavaliers (1-2).

Hart 62, Ventura 47--The Indians outrebounded the Cougars (1-1), 27-7, to reach the semifinals of the Beverly Hills tournament.

Cory Johnson of Hart (5-1) scored all 19 of his points in the second half, including consecutive three-pointers during a 12-2 fourth-quarter run that made it 54-39.

L.A. Baptist 86, St. Bonaventure 73--Jermaine Sweet scored a career-high 40 points and Aaron Davis added 25 for the Knights (3-0) in the Fillmore tournament.

Jake DeGennaro had 25 points for the Seraphs (3-2).

Harvard-Westlake 72, Oak Park 53--Ryan Smiley scored 20 points, and Jarron Collins added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines (4-0) in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Randy Gastwirt had 27 points for the Eagles (2-2), who were within seven points in the fourth quarter.

Dos Pueblos 62, Grant 50--Gilbert Arenas had 20 points for the Lancers (1-4), but they weren’t enough in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Oxnard 74, Santa Maria 53--Ross Randolph scored 30 points and the Yellowjackets (4-1) overcame a 14-point deficit to reach the final of the Channel Islands tournament.

Rio Mesa 71, Camarillo 57--Tyrone Nunnery had 23 points and Louie Allen added 21 for the Spartans (2-0) at Camarillo.

Villanova Prep 56, Windward 34--Justin Yabrof had 17 points and 19 rebounds and the Wildcats (1-1) advanced in the Laguna Blanca tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Calabasas 49, Oak Park 40--Heather Robertson had 14 points and 22 rebounds for the Coyotes (4-2).

Royal 75, Hueneme 28--Michelle Berlin scored 16 points and Alicia Weber added 15 points and eight steals and the Highlanders (3-1) advanced in the Rio Mesa tournament.

Louisville 66, Louis St. Laurent (Edmonton) 46--Rosie Chingcuangco scored 20 points and Becky Witt added 18 points and six steals for the Royals (4-1) in the Jasper Place (Canada) tournament.

Alemany 62, Chatsworth 47--Kelli Kobayashi had 13 points and eight rebounds for Alemany (1-2) in the Buena tournament.

L.A. Baptist 39, Santa Paula 28--Deanna Bergeson had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights (2-1) in the Nordhoff tournament.

North Hollywood 60, Notre Dame 35--Lindsay Sotero-Higa had 19 points for the Huskies (5-1) at Notre Dame (1-5).
