Notre Dame Stung Early by Camarillo Quarterback Joe Borchard and the Camarillo High offense got most of the pregame attention, but the Scorpions’ 20-14 victory over Notre Dame can directly be attributed to defense.

Camarillo, which won its last 12 games, turned two first-half fumbles and a 13-yard punt into a 17-0 lead, then came up with big plays at key times to hold off a furious Notre Dame rally.

The one thing the Scorpion defense didn’t do was stop Notre Dame’s Justin Fargas, who rushed for 201 yards in 31 carries to push his season total to 2,975 yards.

Borchard completed 16 of 28 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown, then placed the credit where it belonged. “I can’t say enough about our defense,” he said. “They really stepped it up.”

CITY 3-A Wilson Collars Williamson, Van Nuys, 14-7 Van Nuys High was within striking distance at the Wilson 32 yard-line with 1 minute 35 seconds to play, but Wolves’ quarterback Robert Williamson was collared for a loss on a fourth-down play, sealing Wilson’s 14-7 victory.

It was an appropriate finish. The Mules’ defense put the brakes on Van Nuys running back Carlos Mack and completely thwarted the rest of the Wolves’ offense.

Mack, who averaged almost six yards a carry in Van Nuys’ first 13 games, was held to 52 yards in 23 carries. He wasn’t even on the field during the final offensive series until the last play.

Coach Mark Pomerantz said Mack was tired, but the Wolves’ senior was clearly in distress. “I needed to be in there for the last drive,” he said.
