Phillips on Target in Antelope Valley Win

Kristin Phillips, a freshman guard from Littlerock High, made five of seven three-point shots and all 12 of her free throws to score 31 points and lead Antelope Valley College over Bakersfield, 101-81, in a women’s basketball game Friday night.

Stacy Hartwell added 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Marauders (5-5), who made 23 of 31 free throws (74.2%).

Sophomore forward Wendy Komin had 37 points and 14 rebounds for the Renegades (6-4), who outrebounded Antelope Valley, 50-41.

Valley 79, Moorpark 76--Shawanda Hotchkiss had 21 points and five rebounds to help the Monarchs (7-4) advance to the final of the Valley tournament.

The Monarchs will play Ventura, a 81-59 winner over Mt. San Antonio, at 6:15 tonight.

Trailing, 53-43, with nine minutes left, Valley outscored Moorpark (5-3), 25-14, to take a 68-67 lead.

Tanya McLaughlin, a former Canyon High standout, hit an 18-foot shot to give the Monarchs the lead for good. McLaughlin finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Valley point guard Virgie Juarez had five points and 11 assists. Jacque Pennies had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Tricia Palmqiust had 23 points for Moorpark.

Ventura 81, Mt. San Antonio 59--Amirah Leonard scored 25 points, including four three-point baskets, for the Pirates at the Valley tournament. Adria Sneed added 13 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 79, Kings River 68--Kevin King scored a career-high 41 points, making 16 of 20 shots, and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Cougars (3-6), who advanced to tonight’s consolation final of the Mid-State tournament in San Luis Obispo.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Channel Islands 78, Oxnard 69--Charles Merricks scored 25 points and Bernabe Simon added 21 to lead the Raiders (6-0) to their third Channel Islands tournament title in the past five years.

Jeff Fouchet scored 23 points and Desmond Davis had 17 for the Yellowjackets (4-2). Merricks and Simon were named the tournament’s co-most valuable players.

Moorpark 74, Montclair Prep 62--Todd Tomlinson made five three-point baskets and finished with 20 points to lead the Musketeers (5-1) to the Faith Baptist tournament championship. Rocky Steryo had 23 points for the Mounties (4-1).

Bell-Jeff 64, North Hollywood 57--Reuben Douglas and Kent Dennis each scored four points in overtime to help the Guards (3-1) take fifth place at the Bell-Jeff tournament. Douglas finished with 29 points.

Keron Wilkerson had 22 points for the Huskies (1-4).

San Fernando 49, Monroe 47--Bryson Atkins scored 15 points and Tyronne Purnell added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (2-3).

L.A. Baptist 70, Carpinteria 51--Jermaine Sweet had 24 points and five rebounds to help the Knights (4-0) advance to the championship game of the Fillmore tournament.

Chaminade 58, Bishop Diego 42--Brett Brownson had 15 points and Justin Stewart had 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Eagles (5-2) in the third-place game of the Faith Baptist tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Birmingham 65, Monroe 32--Artisia McDaniel had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Braves (3-0) at Monroe. Juana Gatson added 13 points, while Tanya Silva had 11 points and eight assists.

Latrica Fleming scored 14 points for the Vikings (2-1).

La Reina 41, Calabasas 39--Susana Murley scored 14 points for the Regents at Calabasas. Heather Robertson had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Coyotes (6-3).

Chino 66, Louisville 40--Becky Witt led the Royals (4-2) with 14 points, but it wasn’t enough as they fell in a second-round game at the Reb Invitational Tournament in Canada. Peggy Johnson added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Oxnard 58, Narbonne 57--With the score tied 56-56, Jaline Bradley sank two free throws with six seconds remaining to lift the Yellowjackets (3-3) at Oxnard. Narbonne had a chance to tie when Khristian Jackson was fouled with no time left, but she made only one of two free throws.

Bradley led Oxnard with 23 points and six assists, and Donya Walker scored 17.

Oak Park 64, Chaminade 52--Sophomore forward Morgan Murphy had 34 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Eagles (3-4) at Oak Park.
