Bill Fitch, who won his 900th game last weekend, was selected as one of the top 10 coaches in the NBA’s 50-year history as voted by reporters who cover the league.

Also on the list were Red Auerbach, Chuck Daly, Red Holzman, Phil Jackson, John Kundla, Don Nelson, Jack Ramsay, Pat Riley and Lenny Wilkens.

“I think it is special,” said Fitch, who has compiled a record of 901-1,009 in 24 seasons. “I don’t have any words for it other than it’s pretty good company. I think every guy on there, I’ve probably lost to.

“I replaced John [Kundla] at [the University of] Minnesota, so he’s a good friend. Phil [Jackson, who played for Fitch at North Dakota] paved my driveway. I’m overwhelmed by the caliber of the list.”

Forward Loy Vaught, who had 18 rebounds in Saturday’s 12-point victory over the Sacramento Kings, tied his career high Monday with 21 rebounds against the Phoenix Suns.

“Wait till you see my next game,” Vaught said. “I can be as tough as anybody on the boards when everything’s lined up.”
