Woodbridge Proves Worthy of No. 2 Ranking

Woodbridge, ranked second in Orange County, took a nine-point lead after the first quarter and went on to a 46-34 victory over No. 6 Capistrano Valley Thursday in an opening-round game at the Santa Barbara girls’ basketball tournament.

The Warriors (5-0) led by as many as 20 points early in the second half. Nicole Roberts scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the third quarter. Roberts also had 11 rebounds.

Jenny Jennings scored 16 points, including 12 on three-pointers, for the Cougars (4-2).

In another tournament game:

Laguna Hills 44, Chino 34--Tamara Inoue scored 18 points, including an eight-for-nine performance from the free-throw line, and had four steals to lead third-ranked Laguna Hills (5-1). Inoue was the only Hawks’ player in double figures. Tayyiba Haneef had nine rebounds and three blocks. Laguna Hills plays L.A. Washington, the No. 1 team from the City Section, today.

In the Artesia-Brethren Christian tournament:

Pacifica 77, Whittier Christian 34--Jaymee Pendergast scored 35 points and had six steals for Pacifica (5-1).

Ocean View 75, Loara 45--Jennifer Tuiolosega scored 32 points and Sharon Shelton had 12 rebounds for Ocean View.

In pool play at the Bolsa Grande tournament:

San Clemente 75, Santa Ana 22--Colleen Turnbull had 16 points and eight rebounds for San Clemente (4-3).

Santa Ana Valley 52, Trabuco Hills 35--Sabrina Jones had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks and Maria Fariaz had 10 points and eight steals for Santa Ana Valley (4-4).

In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

Sunny Hills 1, Rancho Cucamonga 0--Beau Lawson scored a first-half goal in a quarterfinal victory for Sunny Hills (2-4-1).

Mater Dei 7, Sonora 0--Tony Micheletti scored three goals and had two assists to lead fourth-ranked Mater Dei.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Los Alamitos 16, Long Beach Poly 4--Kristin Guerin scored six goals for Los Alamitos, the No. 1 team in the county.
