Fillmore’s Revival Continues

The Fillmore High boys’ soccer team, traditionally a Tri-Valley League doormat, continued its dramatic reversal Thursday, defeating Bishop Diego, 2-0, for its sixth victory without a defeat.

Evelio Arriaga converted a penalty kick in the 18th minute for a 1-0 lead after teammate Homero Magana was fouled. The penalized Bishop Diego defender was ejected, followed by the Cardinal coach.

Francisco Zavala scored in the 70th minute, redirecting a cross from Arriaga.

Fillmore (3-0 in league) was a combined 8-20-5 in the last two seasons.

La Canada 1, Palmdale 0--Bryan Jackson scored in the 21st minute off a pass from Britton Cobb to give the Spartans (8-0) their 58th consecutive victory and the La Canada tournament title.

Oak Park 3, St. Bonaventure 1--Brian Guerrero, Dan Solis and Russell Prior scored first-half goals for the Eagles (4-1-3, 1-1) in a Tri-Valley League match at St. Bonaventure.

Brian Schweppe scored for the Seraphs (1-4-1, 0-2).

Notre Dame 1, Saugus 0--Pat Thomsen’s goal off a free kick in the seventh minute was the difference for the Knights (3-1) in a nonleague victory over the Centurions (4-2-2) at Notre Dame.

Buena 4, Oxnard 0--Mike Bradbury, Randy Glaser and J.J. Delgado scored in the first half and Dylan Chappell had a goal in the second half for the Bulldogs (5-1-2, 2-0) in a Channel League match at Oxnard.

Rio Mesa 1, Ventura 0--David Cervantes scored in the 63rd minute for the Spartans (4-1-1, 1-0-1) in a Channel League defeat of the Cougars (0-3-1, 0-2) at Rio Mesa.

Kennedy 1, Taft 0--Greg Avila scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute for the Golden Cougars (2-4-1, 2-0-1) in a West Valley League match at Taft.

Crespi 2, St. John Bosco 0--Bharat Sahgal and Jeff Freedman scored on free kicks in the first half for the Celts (4-1-1) at Crespi.

Glendale 1, Hoover 0--Vaagn Babayan’s second-half penalty kick gave the Dynamiters (5-3) the consolation title at the La Canada tournament.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Quartz Hill 4, Paraclete 4--Trailing, 4-2, with five minutes to play, the Rebels (2-0-4) got goals by Kim Tahsuda and Shauna Murray at Paraclete.

Ventura 2, Rio Mesa 0--Katie Atturio’s goal in the 55th minute broke a scoreless tie and the Cougars (2-1-3, 1-0-1) recorded their fifth shutout of the season in a Channel League match at Ventura.

St. Bonaventure 4, Santa Clara 1--Danika Cordell and Christina Gonzalez each scored two goals for the Seraphs (8-0) at Santa Clara.

Buena 5, Oxnard 0--Megan Munday scored three first-half goals in a Channel League match at Buena.

Hart 2, Louisville 0--Becca Gould scored in the seventh minute and Erin Misaki in the 58th minute for the Indians (5-0-2).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Albertson 71, The Master’s 65--The Mustangs committed 18 turnovers and could not overcome a 10-point halftime deficit in the first round of the Southern California College tournament at Cal Poly Pomona.

Mike Penberthy had 22 points for Master’s (6-4).
