Joseph’s Last-Second Free Throws Lift Master’s

Jerome Joseph made two free throws with one second remaining to give The Master’s College men’s basketball team an 88-86 victory over Western Washington in the fifth-place game of the Cal Poly Pomona tournament Saturday.

Joseph, a freshman point guard from Chatsworth High, had 13 points, three assists and three steals to help the Mustangs (8-4) to their fourth victory in five games.

Mike Penberthy scored 30 points for Master’s and Joclin Julmist had 13 points and 18 rebounds.

Penberthy made only eight of 23 shots, but he was seven of 16 from three-point range and made seven of eight free throws.

In other men’s basketball games:

Antelope Valley 84, Hancock 51--John Burrell scored 15 points to lead the Marauders (13-3) in the championship game of the Sequoias tournament.

Michael Hamelin, who was selected most valuable player, added 13 points. Antelope Valley has won the Sequoias tournament two of the last three years.

Fullerton 93, Glendale 81--The Vaqueros (6-8) couldn’t handle the Hornets’ superior height and let a two-point halftime lead slip away in the third-place game of the Glendale tournament. Carl Biel had 37 points and Ryan Silva added 21 for Glendale.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pepperdine 70, Nevada 47--Angela White had 16 points, and Jenny Frank and Sara Pierce each scored 10 for the Waves (5-3) in a first-round game of the Pepperdine tournament.

Samantha Rigley had eight points, eight assists and nine rebounds for Pepperdine.

Valley 82, Victor Valley 78--Shawanda Hotchkiss scored 21 of her 34 points in the second half and the Monarchs (8-5) rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit at Valley. Jacque Tennies had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Valley.
