Marina Uses Balance to Beat Merced

Marina used balanced scoring in the fourth quarter to rally and beat Merced, 67-65, Thursday in the first round of the Canyon boys’ basketball tournament.

The teams were tied, 28-28, at halftime, but Merced took a 56-47 lead at the end of three quarters. Five Marina players then scored four points each and outscored Merced, 20-9, in the final quarter. Scott Austin led Marina with 15 points and Steve Vo had 12.

Merced’s Andre Hedrington had a game-high 16 points.

In other Canyon tournament games:

Saddleback 56, Costa Mesa 40--Derrick Barnes had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Saddleback, which took a 27-15 halftime lead. Sophomore Terrell Foster added 12 points and seven rebounds for Saddleback. Costa Mesa was led by Matt Chaisson with 16 points.

Loara 59, Okanagan (Canada) 42--Will Hall led Loara with 15 points, as the Saxons (7-4) rallied from a 33-28 halftime deficit, outscoring Okanagan, 20-7, in the third quarter. Martin Banda added 12 points for Loara.

La Crescenta Crescenta Valley 56, Buena Park 48--Andrius Ragauskas scored 20 points for Crescenta Valley.

Canyon 62, St. Albert (Canada) 32--Justin Haney scored 22 points, including three three-pointers for Canyon, which led, 48-28, after three quarters.

El Modena 69, Cerritos 56--George Gurrola scored 27 points for El Modena. Tommy Ngo scored 21 points for El Modena. The Vanguards (7-5) play Fullerton at 7 tonight at El Modena.

Fullerton 62, Rowland Heights Rowland 59--Brandon Rosenthal made two free throws with four seconds remaining to clinch the victory for Fullerton. David Brookman had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Michael Sailhamer had 10 assists for the Indians.

In the Daily Pilot Coast Christmas Classic:

Esperanza 58, Lakewood Mayfair 39--Chad Willardson scored 18 points and Drew Gaulden added 15 for Esperanza.

Trabuco Hills 74, Corona del Mar 54--Chris Majors scored 18 points to lead Trabuco Hills (5-6), which took a 43-28 halftime lead. Ryan Webster and Jerome Lewis each added 12 points for the Mustangs.

Edison 65, Glendale Hoover 55--Dimitri Karnezis, who had 31 points, scored 16 of Edison’s 20 second-quarter points when the Chargers (6-3) extended their lead to 37-27.

Estancia 53, Bakersfield Stockdale 30--Brandon Casillas scored 13 points for Estancia (8-3).

In the Bullhead City, Ariz., tournament:

Irvine 75, Calipatria 43--Chris Ferguson scored 21 points in a first-round victory for Irvine (6-5).

Magnolia 78, Mojave 54--Art Garland scored 20 points, Brian Morris had 17 and Dennis Loza 13 for Magnolia.

In the Mt. Carmel tournament:

Mission Viejo 71, Vista 47--Gabe Burt scored 24 points and had seven rebounds in a first-round victory for Mission Viejo. Commander King had 18 points for the Diablos (8-3).

Mission Viejo plays Santa Monica at 4:40 p.m. today in the quarterfinals.

Los Alamitos 48, Spring Valley Monte Vista 38--Matt Komer scored 14 points and had eight rebounds for Los Alamitos (9-1). Kevin Staniec had 12 points for the Griffins. Los Alamitos plays Vista at 3 p.m. today.

In the San Marcos tournament:

Tustin 66, Burbank Burroughs 43--Greg Carnal scored 16 points for Tustin (7-3) in a pool-play game.

In the La Puente Nogales tournament:

San Clemente 65, Monrovia 28--Jan Tatala scored 18 points and Rick Saul added 17 points and five assists for the Tritons (9-1), who led, 24-6, after one quarter.

In the Brea Olinda tournament:

La Habra 67, Rancho Alamitos 43--Dave Ploog and Marc Rueckert had 12 points for La Habra, which advances to play Brea at 8:30 p.m. tonight in the second round. Chris Torina had 23 for Rancho Alamitos, which plays Whittier Christian at 2:30 p.m. in a consolation game.

Troy 68, Pasadena Blair 57--Dave Sun had 22 points and Scott Blake added 19 for Troy, which plays Rancho Buena Vista at 7 p.m. tonight in the second round.

In the Eagle Rock tournament:

Woodland Hills Taft 75, St. Margaret’s 52--James George had 16 points, including four three-pointers, for St. Margaret’s (3-4) in the first round.

In the Katella tournament:

Katella 56, Savanna 38--Kenny Moreno scored 23 points for Katella (8-3), which led, 24-14, at halftime. Enele Boone scored 16 points for Savanna.

In the St. Louis (Hawaii) tournament:

La Quinta 37, Honolulu Kalaheo 33--Scott Ogilvie scored 16 points and had 15 rebounds in a first-round victory for La Quinta (5-5).
