Big Day by Fay Lifts Buena Past Calabasas, 64-61

Guard Ryan Fay scored 28 points to lead Buena High to a 64-61 victory over Calabasas on Friday in a semifinal game of the Ventura tournament.

Fay, brother of former Buena standout Lance Fay, made four three-point baskets.

Guard T.J. Stafford scored 12 points for Buena (6-3), and he made six of six free throws in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Coleman scored 17 points for the Coyotes (9-4), but fouled out with 5:09 to play.

Bobby Baumann of Calabasas scored 14 points, nine in the fourth quarter.

In other Ventura tournament games:

Agoura 63, Ventura 49--Marcus Helfman scored 24 points to lead the Chargers (4-5) into the final against Buena. John Barry had 19 points on eight-of-12 shooting, and grabbed eight rebounds for Agoura.

Christian Gallagher scored 17 points for Ventura (5-5).

Granada Hills 70, Highland 60--Leon Pimky scored 21 points and Scott Newmann scored 19 for Granada Hills (6-5) in a consolation game.

Bakersfield Centennial 59, Crespi 46--Center Mike Rexroth scored 21 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Centennial (3-7) in a consolation game. Ron Quarterman paced Crespi (3-6) with 12 points.

In the Eagle Rock tournament:

Poly 67, Bravo Medical 35--Ellis Richardson scored 18 points and William Wilson added 10 for the Parrots in a quarterfinal game.

Poly plays University in the semifinals at 6:30 tonight.

In the Santa Barbara tournament:

Moorpark 80, Cabrillo 60--Keith Donahue scored 21 points to lead the Musketeers (9-4) in a pool play game.

Moorpark had four other players score in double digits: Todd Tomlinson (12 points), Byron Burnett (15), Kevin Lawrence (12) and Andrew Carlson (10).

In the Las Vegas tournament:

Arizona Marana 56, Westlake 50--The Warriors (5-6) were outscored, 13-8, in the fourth quarter in a consolation semifinal.

Joey Cuppari scored 16 points for Westlake and Ian Markham added 11.

In the Santa Paula tournament:

Newbury Park 78, Oxnard 68--Mike Bowers scored 28 points and Brian Bobik had 27 to lead the Panthers into the final. Newbury Park (8-4) will play Santa Paula or Fillmore in the championship game at 8:15 tonight.

Trailing, 38-23, at halftime, the Panthers outscored Oxnard, 30-16, in the third quarter. Bowers had 14 in the third quarter.

Hueneme 79, Morro Bay 73--Oscar Rivera made a 50-foot shot at the third-quarter buzzer to give the Vikings a 57-56 lead en route to a consolation semifinal victory.

Paul McCrae led the Vikings (3-5) with 26 points.

In the Mt. Carmel tournament:

Channel Islands 94, El Capitan 65--Charles Merricks and Bernabe Simon combined to score 24 of Channel Islands’ 31 points in the first quarter of a second-round game.

Merricks and Simon each finished with 20 points, and O.J. Thomas had 18 points and seven steals.

The Raiders improved to 8-2.

In the Pasadena La Salle tournament:

Franklin 68, Montclair Prep 53--The Mounties lost an early lead in a semifinal game.

Montclair Prep (5-4) led, 15-3, in the first quarter, but Franklin closed the half with a 23-4 run for a 26-19 halftime lead.

Rocky Steryo led Montclair Prep with 17 points and Jules Thompson had 10 points.

The Mounties played without guard Micah Cohen, who sprained an ankle in Thursday’s game.

In the Marin Catholic tournament:

Santa Clara 59, Huntington Park 44--Nick Jones had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Skye Peterson had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints (6-0) in a quarterfinal game.

Peter Lee scored 12 points and had six steals for Santa Clara.

In the Birmingham tournament:

Kennedy 71, Van Nuys 40--Mike Calloway scored 26 points and the Golden Cougars (4-6) took a 26-11 halftime lead and routed the Wolves in a first-round game.

Earlier this season, Kennedy defeated Van Nuys, 43-42, on a three-point basket at the buzzer.

In the Chaminade tournament:

Chatsworth 76, Seattle Rainer Beach 75--Chatsworth’s Montae McFarland made a jump shot with two seconds to play in a second-round game.

Harold Shevlin scored 36 points to lead the Chancellors (6-3).
