Fountain Valley Wins El Toro Wrestling Meet

The Fountain Valley wrestling team won the championship of the El Toro Christmas Classic, scoring 192 points Saturday.

Bryan Masumoto (112 pounds) and Clint Chin (119) placed second, Cato Yang (103), John Jadia (125) and Brian Sanfilipo (heavyweight) finished third for the Barons.

Magnolia finished third as Nathan Anya (130) won his weight class and Erland Jones (189) placed second for the Sentinels.

Newport Harbor’s Jason Deere won the heavyweight class.

In the Ontario Christian boys’ soccer tournament:

Orange Lutheran 2, Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World 0--Eric Van de Zilver scored a goal and assisted on Sean Silva’s to lead Orange Lutheran (6-3-1) to the consolation championship. Goalkeeper Shawn Vance assisted on Silva’s goal.

In the Trabuco Hills boys’ soccer tournament:

Santa Margarita 2, Saddleback 2 (Santa Margarita advances on penalty kicks, 6-5)--Byron Foss made three saves on penalty kicks for Santa Margarita. Timothy Pierce scored the tying goal in overtime to send the game into the shootout.

Trabuco Hills 9, St. Margaret’s 1--Jared Hayman scored two goals in the first half for Trabuco Hills (4-4). The Mustangs led 6-1 at halftime.

Woodbridge 0, El Toro 0 (Woodbridge advances on penalty kicks, 10-9)--Goalie Doug Allan scored the winning penalty kick in the shootout for Woodbridge. The game was called a tie before its scheduled start because of an unplayable field. Both coaches agreed to decide the outcome on penalty kicks.

In the Claremont girls’ soccer tournament:

Brea Olinda 0, Norco 0 (Brea wins on penalty kicks, 4-2)--Megan Pickering blocked two penalty kicks as Brea Olinda (11-3) won the consolation championship. Pickering had four saves in regulation for her fifth shutout of the season.

The Ladycats defeated Claremont JV in an earlier consolation game, 2-1.

In the Ocean View girls’ soccer tournament:

Mater Dei 3, West Torrance 1--Paige Pancoast, Kim Buccola and Alison Fennell each scored a goal advancing 10th-ranked Mater Dei (8-2) to Monday’s championship game. In the quarterfinals, Katie Ticehurst scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Kennedy (8-3).

Sunny Hills 1, University 0--Jill Wilson scored the winning goal in the second half for Sunny Hills (6-3-2). In an earlier game, Sunny Hills defeated Estancia, 3-0, led by Loni Bishop with two goals.
