Bohle Makes Commitment to USC

Harvard-Westlake High girls’ volleyball player Christine Bohle said she has accepted a scholarship to USC.

Bohle, a 5-foot-11 swing hitter, is a three-time Southern Section selection and helped lead the Wolverines to sectional titles the past two seasons. She chose USC over UC Irvine and Utah.

Taryn Linder, Viewpoint High’s all-time leader in kills, assists and aces, has been accepted to Southern Methodist, and will play next season as a walk on. The 5-8 setter-outside hitter was the Heritage League most valuable player the past two years.

Butler’s in: Heavyweight Lionel Butler of Los Angeles has been added to the Jan. 23 boxing program at the Reseda Country Club. Butler will fight either Iran Barkley or Gerard Jones for the World Boxing Federation championship. The fight is on the undercard of the Rafael Ruelas-Javier Valadez main event.

Hot ticket: The Lancaster JetHawks will host the Seattle Mariners in an exhibition game March 30. Players on the Mariners’ opening-day roster, including Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez and Jay Buhner, are expected to make the trip to Lancaster before their season opener in Seattle against the World Series champion New York Yankees.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 22 after JetHawk season-ticket holders have the opportunity to purchase seats in advance starting Feb. 10. Season tickets are available at the JetHawks’ ticket office. Individual game tickets go on sale March 1.

Highly regarded: The Cal Lutheran baseball team is ranked No. 4 in Collegiate Baseball magazine’s preseason NCAA Division III poll. The Kingsmen were national runners-up last season with a 34-14-1 record.

Cal Lutheran, the defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, opens Feb. 8 in the First-Pitch Classic hosted by Claremont-Mudd and Pomona-Pitzer.

Cal State Northridge, unranked in Division I, opens the season Jan. 24 at home against Cal Baptist and Pepperdine, ranked No. 37 by Collegiate Baseball, opens Jan. 31 at home against Nevada.

Gone: Jamaal Washington, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior forward, quit the Reseda High boys’ basketball team, leaving the Regents (0-10) without a returning starter.

Washington, who also played on the football team, averaged eight points and five rebounds last season.

Comeback: Westlake High guard Jake Stewart, who was averaging 23.3 points before suffering a sprained ankle that sidelined him for a month, will play tonight against Camarillo.

“He’s probably at about 85-90% ,” Coach Gary Grayson said. “He could have played last week but we wanted to save him for league.”
