No. 9 Marina Wins Despite Nakase’s Ankle Injury

Marina point guard Natalie Nakase left the game in the first minute of the second half, but the ninth-ranked Vikings held on for a 58-46 Sunset League girls’ basketball victory over eighth-ranked Huntington Beach Tuesday. Both teams are tied for second place.

Nakase (15.1 points and 6.2 assists) injured her ankle; she left with four points and Marina holding a 10-point lead. Huntington Beach (15-7, 4-3), led by Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham (15 points), got as close as 50-44, but scored only one basket in the final four minutes.

Marisa Emde, who made four three-point baskets, scored eight of her 22 points in the second quarter as Marina (16-5, 4-3) outscored Huntington Beach, 21-12.

In the Empire League:

Century 57, El Dorado 51 (OT)--Aprile Powell made a three-pointer with two seconds left in regulation to tie and Century then outscored El Dorado, 14-8, in overtime. The Centurions (17-6, 7-0) have a two-game lead in the standings with three games to play.

In Sea View League girls’ soccer:

Newport Harbor 3, Woodbridge 2--Tough defensive play in the second half by Amy Leaf and Melissa Pomery helped unranked Newport Harbor preserve its one-point lead over No. 10 Woodbridge. Taylor Yurada scored two goals and Kyle McNicol added the third for the Sailors (6-9-2, 1-5-1).

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 3, Dana Hills 2--Alison Fennell, who scored two goals, shot the winner with four minutes remaining for fifth-ranked Mater Dei (13-4, 4-2). Kim Buccola had the other goal for the Monarchs (13-4, 4-2). Andrea Warner and Sydney Leonard scored for No. 8 Dana Hills (9-6-2, 1-2-2).

In Sunset League girls’ water polo:

Los Alamitos 3, Marina 2 (2 OT)--Shelly Linza scored with 5:34 left in sudden death as top-ranked Los Alamitos defeated fourth-ranked Marina (10-4, 6-2).

Jennifer Moffett scored with 1:39 left in the fourth quarter to tie the score for the Griffins (18-0, 8-0).

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Costa Mesa 14, Long Beach Millikan 11 (OT)--Amy Devey scored three of her five goals in overtime to lead Costa Mesa (8-10). Millikan (8-8) scored with 34 seconds left to force an overtime period. Cari Howse had four goals and Stephanie Lombardo scored a goal and had seven saves for Costa Mesa.

In Garden Grove League wrestling:

Santiago 45, Los Amigos 15--Eddie Sanchez, at 135 pounds, pinned his opponent in 37 seconds to improve his record to 22-7 for eighth-ranked Santiago (24-1, 6-0), which clinched the league title for the third straight year.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 41, Newport Harbor 30--Santa Margarita, ranked fifth in the county, trailed, 21-0, before Ryan Best turned it around by defeating Rigo Pinon, 8-7, in the 130-pound class. The victory clinched the first league wrestling title for the Eagles (12-5-1, 5-0).
