A-OK: La Canada Athletic Director Randy Boal said Friday that transfer eligibility has been verified for four members of the girls’ soccer team.

South Pasadena questioned the eligibility of the players last Friday after the Spartans defeated the Tigers to claim the Rio Hondo League title. The players, who transferred from Arcadia in December, were cleared for varsity play on Feb. 10, Boal said.

“Our principal and vice principal made a home visit [Thursday] and everything is cool,” Boal said. “Both families were present and the evidence [of their residing in La Canada] was very clear.”

La Canada (6-8-2) plays host to Calabasas (10-6-3) today at 3 p.m. in a Southern Section Division III first-round match.

Powder power: Teams will do almost anything for a postseason edge. Case in point: the Chaminade girls’ soccer team, which has been upset in first-round Southern Section playoff matches two years in a row.

The Eagles, who play host to Redondo today in a Division III first-round match, on Tuesday began consuming doses of a powdered energy supplement.

Chaminade Athletic Director Ed Croson said he recommended the players take Creatine Monohydrate, which he said the Eagle football team has used for the past four seasons.

“It’s available in any health food store,” Croson said. “It won’t turn you into Wonder Woman but we recommend it for injury prevention, especially late in the season.”

Four times a day, Chaminade players mix a teaspoon of powder with grape juice or fruit punch. Coach Mike Evans said a bottle of the powder costs about $35 wholesale and lasts the 15 players a day and a half. The cost is footed by the players.

“I’ll try anything,” Evans said. “We’ll take it until we lose.”

Tough loss: Ryan Smith, a promising Thousand Oaks High athlete who moved to Texas last summer, will be the first Dallas Marcus High sophomore to letter in three varsity sports. Smith played wide receiver in football, shooting guard in basketball and is an outfielder on the baseball team.

Moving up: Craig Witmer was named volleyball coach at Newbury Park High.
