Morningside’s Denman Puts Away Chaminade

Morningside High guard Lee Denman scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and the Monarchs beat Chaminade, 61-49, in a Southern Section Division III-A semifinal at Inglewood High.

Chaminade (20-8) trailed, 46-43, early in the fourth quarter before Morningside (21-5) went on a 5-0 run. Then Eagle forward Scott Long picked up his fifth foul. The Eagles trailed, 53-48, with 2:15 to play in the game, but were outscored, 8-1. The Eagles made only two of 12 field-goal attempts in the final quarter and seven of 12 free throws.

Morningside led from the 6:25 mark in the first quarter, building a 20-10 lead by forcing 10 Chaminade turnovers.

Chaminade was able to stay in the game by going to the foul line. The Eagles converted 17 of 30 free throws, while Morningside made six of seven free throws in the game.

Chaminade was hurt by hitting only 34% from the field. The Eagles also committed 17 turnovers for the game.

Forward Justin Stewart was the only Eagle to score in double figures, with 19 points. Long added nine points.

Morningside center Jonothan Hubbard scored 22 points.
