Corona del Mar Dominates Match With Laguna Beach

Corona del Mar won eight of nine sets in doubles and defeated Laguna Beach, 14-4, in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Wednesday at Laguna Beach.

Chris Jensen and Cameron Taylor swept their sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and Esan Mozeyani and Sam Shahmardi swept, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1, for the Sea Kings (3-2), ranked third in Orange County and the Southern Section Division I.

Laguna Beach junior Aaron Talarico swept in singles. He beat two of Corona del Mar’s All-Sea View League players from last season, Sameer Chopra, 6-0, and Greg Coleman, 6-0. Talarico also defeated Curtis Ellmore, 6-2.

Chopra, Coleman and Ellmore won the other six singles sets for Corona del Mar.

In other nonleague boys’ tennis:

Aliso Niguel 12, Mission Viejo 6--Jason Mednick and Jonathan Lippert swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, for Aliso Niguel (6-2), ranked sixth in the county and ninth in Division I. In doubles, Sean King and Tyler Verdieck and Chris Flynn and Victor Carone won two of three doubles sets each for the Wolverines.

Eric Bachelor swept in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, for Mission Viejo (3-3), ranked sixth in Division II.

Dana Hills 17, Newport Harbor 1--Brandon Fallon swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and sophomore Brian Kent also swept, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, for host Dana Hills (6-0), ranked second in the county and fourth in Division IV.

Ken Oakes and Matt Dubow swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, and sophomores Brian Liebman and Elliott Fischer also swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, for the Dolphins, who won all nine doubles sets.

El Dorado 16, Alhambra Keppel 2--Michael Peng swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting El Dorado (7-0), ranked eighth in the county. Freshman Charles Dao swept in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, for El Dorado, which lost only 11 games in the nine singles sets.

Foothill 15, La Quinta 3--Playing without junior Joost Hol, the Knights still won easily, winning nine doubles sets. Sophomore Ryan Katzman and junior Nick Mucha swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for visiting Foothill (4-3), ranked fifth in Division II.

Seniors Brian Higby and Andy Fischel won their doubles sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, and seniors Jason McAllister and Kevin Dowdel swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-4, 6-4.

Garden Grove 13, Esperanza 5--Garden Grove (6-1), ranked 10th, won all nine doubles sets, led by Sam Choe and Kevin Kim, who swept, 6-3, 6-1, 7-6. Tom Lloyd swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, in singles for Esperanza (2-4).

San Clemente 10, Laguna Hills 8--Jason Gavilan swept in singles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, and Nathan Pearson and Landon Yaple swept, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2, in doubles for San Clemente (3-5).

Servite 12, Sonora 6--Brock Heimann swept in singles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, and Beau Chung and Ryan Mauban swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, for Servite (8-0), which plays ninth-ranked Los Alamitos today.

Whittier Christian 10, St. Margaret’s 8--Junior Martin Lukac and freshman Jordan Reisenweber swept in doubles for the visiting Tartans (1-4), 7-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Western 11, Pacifica 7--The doubles team of Rodel Valdez and David Heck won its three matches, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5, for Western (6-1). Pacifica is 3-3.
