Pacifica Beats Arizona Team in Softball

Amanda Freed pitched a two-hit shutout as Pacifica defeated Arizona’s 5-A state semifinalist Tucson Canyon del Oro, 1-0, in a quarterfinal game of the Bullhead City tournament Friday in Arizona.

Freed, 6-0 for the season, had 13 strikeouts for Pacifica, which is ranked second in Orange County. Toni Mascarenes doubled in Shawna Goesslin for the only run in the top of the first inning. Goesslin walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tiffany Wallace to set up the winning run.

Pacifica will face the defending 4-A Arizona state champion Scottsdale Chaparral in the semifinals today. Chaparral has a 60-2 record over two seasons.

In the other semifinal, Woodbridge will face Mater Dei at noon. Woodbridge defeated Deer Valley (Ariz.), 2-1, and Mater Dei was a 7-0 winner over El Toro.

In the Garden Grove softball tournament:

Santa Margarita 7, Rancho Alamitos 0 (6, time limit)--Jackie Farmer and Katie Fisher combined on a one-hit shutout for 10th-ranked Santa Margarita (6-1). Kristen Morley was three for three with two runs scored and three stolen bases for the Eagles.

In the Hoover softball tournament:

Foothill 12, Glendale Hoover 0--Lauren Schwendimann, who pitched a perfect game Thursday, had a one-hitter Friday to lead third-ranked Foothill (10-1) to the championship.

Foothill scored nine runs in the first inning on eight hits. Lauren Bauer went four for five on the day, with a triple, two stolen bases and four RBIs.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Canyon 132, Western 31--Darby Schlaht won the 200 freestyle (2:09.5), 100 freestyle (58.6) and swam on two winning relays for Canyon (4-0). Melissa Luque also swam on two winning relays and won the 50 freestyle (26.4) and the 100 breaststroke (1:17.9).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Santa Margarita 14, Villa Park 4--Dan Deen and Jason Walsh won their doubles matches, 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, to go 15-3 for the season for seventh-ranked Santa Margarita (8-0).

B.K. Chang swept his sets, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1, for Villa Park.

In Empire League volleyball:

El Dorado 3, Western 2--Matt Peacock had 32 kills to lead El Dorado (5-2, 1-0), which won, 8-15, 11-15, 15-10, 15-9, 15-8.
