Treasure Trove of Titles

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Another store has joined the expanding group of “traveling” shops--those businesses that show up for a brief period, then vanish until next time.

The Book Market opened in February and will be around for a period of two to six months to sell its wares.

This large warehouse-type space, with cement floors and temporary wooden counters, offers publishers’ remainders at truly bargain prices, and includes all types of books.

You’ll find novels like “Pretty Boy Floyd,” which is soon to be made into a film, that retailed for $24 and now priced at $5.99.

If you’re into the classics, there’s a large group of titles by D.H. Lawrence, Oscar Wilde, Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott and Shakespeare, all from Wordsworth Classics Publishing Co. These paperbacks sell for $5 for two or $3 each, a great way to assemble a library.

There are lots of nonfiction titles to choose from. “Body & Soul: The Black Woman’s Guide to Physical Health & Emotional Well Being” went for $20 and here it’s $8. Mary Crow Dog’s book, “Lakota Woman,” can be on your bookshelf for $5.20 instead of $13.

For computer buffs wanting to build up a reference library, there is the vast selection of books--Apple, Mac, DOS etc., frequently with discs included. These regularly sell for $29.99 to $49.99 and are available here for $4.99 to $6.99.

And there is a good selection for children, many educational books and hardcover classics at $2.97 each or four for $10. Audiotapes sell for $4 to $8 a set, coloring books, crossword puzzles and workbooks for $1 and $2.50, plus a good selection of Bibles--all at rock-bottom prices.

New shipments come in every two weeks, so it pays to stop in from time to time.
