Two Pitchers Placed on the Disabled List

Share

Damaso Marte, considered the best prospect on the JetHawk pitching staff, and Rafael Rivera, a top reliever, will be placed on the disabled list today, both with sore elbows, pitching coach Jim Slaton said.

Marte and Rivera each complained of pain after throwing in Tuesday night’s workout at the Hangar. Marte, who was scheduled to start tonight, will be replaced by Rob Luce. Luce, who was in the fifth spot in the rotation, will be replaced by right-hander Chris Beck.

Two pitchers are expected to arrive from extended spring training today to take the roster spots. Slaton doesn’t know who they will be, just that neither will be Jeff Farnsworth.

Farnsworth, the Seattle Mariners’ second-round pick in last June’s draft, pitched in Arizona earlier this week and his arm felt fine, but his stomach then bothered him because of medication he was taking for his arm.

Catcher David Skeels (Thousand Oaks High) and Beck (The Master’s College) are the only players with local ties on the JetHawks, but they aren’t the only ones in the California League.

Catchers Casey Snow (Crespi) and Steve Mikesell (Glendale College) are with San Bernardino, outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. (Granada Hills, Mission College) is with Rancho Cucamonga, right-handed pitcher Bobby Kazmirski (Agoura) and second baseman Dave Newhan (Pepperdine) are with Visalia, and right-handed pitcher Robert Crabtree (Cal State Northridge) and outfielder Mike Glendenning (Crespi, Pierce) are with Bakersfield.
